Understanding and designing post-build rolling for mitigation of residual stress and distortion in wire arc additively manufactured components

Valeriy Gornyakov et al.

Summary: Post-build rolling can effectively mitigate residual stress and distortion in WAAM-built components, with slotted rollers being the most effective in introducing tensile plastic strain to counteract compressive strain generated during WAAM deposition. The rolling load and roller-to-wall friction coefficient significantly influence the effectiveness of the mitigation process, providing insights for the development of optimal post-build rolling processes in WAAM manufacturing.

Comprehensive review of wire arc additive manufacturing: Hardware system, physical process, monitoring, property characterization, application and future prospects

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This paper provides a detailed review of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), covering its hardware system, physical process, monitoring, property characterization, application, and future prospects. The research shows that WAAM has the potential for large-scale industrial production with lower cost and higher efficiency compared to other metal additive manufacturing technologies. The hardware systems are crucial and primarily based on four types of arc welding machines. The study identifies complex physical phenomena and investigates various technological parameters to understand the physical mechanisms. Proper monitoring and property characterization are essential for evaluating the quality of additive parts, and typical defects are reported. The paper also concludes six possible research directions for future development, including establishing detailed databases, hybrid additive and subtractive technology, additional processes, multi-scale and multi-physics research, multi-variable monitoring system, and artificial intelligence.

Computationally Efficient Models of High Pressure Rolling for Wire Arc Additively Manufactured Components

Valeriy Gornyakov et al.

Summary: This study developed four efficient rolling models and achieved a 96.5% reduction in computational time and accurate stress and strain predictions by using a short-length transient model with fewer elements than a control model. An Eulerian steady-state model was slightly less efficient but much less accurate. The 2D rolling model was highly efficient but less predictive.

A review on wire and arc additive manufacturing of titanium alloy

Zidong Lin et al.

Summary: Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is an economic and efficient technology suitable for producing large-scale metallic components, particularly in the fabrication of near-net-shape and large-scale titanium alloys. It has been significantly noticed and adopted due to its high deposition rate, low machinery cost, and shortened lead time compared to other powder-based additive manufacturing techniques.

Enhancing the properties of aluminum alloys fabricated using wire plus arc additive manufacturing technique-A review

M. M. Tawfik et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in wire thorn arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of aluminum components offer unique opportunities for enhancing their properties. Studies have focused on controlling manufacturing parameters, wire properties, arc mode, and post-process treatment to regulate microstructure and mechanical characteristics of fabricated aluminum parts. The paper reviews various attempts to enhance the mechanical properties of aluminum components fabricated with WAAM, as well as challenges faced in applying WAAM to aluminum alloys. The main goal is to gain a detailed understanding of the mechanical characteristics of deposited aluminum components under different conditions.
