Effect of deformation and grain size on austenite decomposition during quenching and partitioning of (high) silicon-aluminum steels

P. K. Kantanen et al.

Summary: The study describes the effect of austenite deformation on carbon partitioning and transformation to athermal and isothermal martensite, and bainite during quenching and partitioning (QP). It was found that deformation close to the no-recrystallization temperature refines the grain size, lowers the martensite start temperature and affects the stability of austenite during QP processing. These results can help in designing optimal QP treatments for these novel steels by corroborating the QP microstructures and their hardness through dilatation measurements and retained austenite contents at room temperature.

Wire and arc additive manufacturing: Opportunities and challenges to control the quality and accuracy of manufactured parts

Davoud Jafari et al.

Summary: Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is capable of producing medium to large components with high-rate deposition and potentially unlimited build size, requiring optimized process planning for uniform, defect-free deposition. This technology has shifted from a prototyping technique to a viable and cost-effective production method, emphasizing dimensional precision and surface finish for manufactured components.

Composition-dependent solidification cracking of aluminum-silicon alloys during laser powder bed fusion

Holden Hyer et al.

Summary: The successful manufacturing of volumetrically dense engineering components free of solidification cracks by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has been demonstrated for Al-Si alloys such as AlSi10Mg and Al12Si. The study found cracking susceptibility in Al-Si alloys with 1.0 and 2.0 wt.% Si, attributed to relatively large magnitudes of vertical bar dT/df(S)(1/2)vertical bar. Si segregation at the intercellular boundaries and the formation of a cellular structure were observed, allowing for estimation of the cooling rate.

Comparison of wire-arc and powder-laser additive manufacturing for IN718 superalloy: unified consideration for selecting process parameters based on volumetric energy density

Xin Lu et al.

Summary: Proper selection of initial process parameters is crucial for the successful fabrication of large IN718 superalloy parts using additive manufacturing techniques like WAAM and PLAM. The relationship between energy density and controllable parameters plays a significant role in ensuring high quality and defect-free cladding beads. The high material utilization under equal effective power and cladding speed is a major factor contributing to the efficiency of WAAM over PLAM.

Integration of Processing and Microstructure Models for Non-Equilibrium Solidification in Additive Manufacturing

Noah Sargent et al.

Summary: The study aims to model solidification during additive manufacturing by integrating process and solidification models, considering factors such as energy density and non-equilibrium solidification. Experimental validation on Al-Cu alloys and SS316L shows a linear relationship between energy density and solidification cracking susceptibility. It demonstrates the importance of integrating process and microstructure models in modeling solidification during additive manufacturing.
