Biocides in antifouling paint formulations currently registered for use

Cesar Augusto Paz-Villarraga et al.

Summary: Antifouling paints incorporate biocides to prevent the growth of unwanted organisms, but these biocides also impact non-target organisms and ecosystems. This study examined the occurrence and concentrations of biocides in antifouling paint formulations worldwide. The results identified 25 active ingredients currently used, with cuprous oxide, copper pyrithione, zinc pyrithione, zineb, DCOIT, and cuprous thiocyanate being the most frequent ones.

Summary: This review focuses on six major bioinspired antifouling strategies, discusssing their mechanisms, fabrication methods, and current issues. It also introduces the multifunctional bioinspired antifouling strategy, combining the strengths of multiple approaches to potentially enhance the coatings' antifouling capabilities and lifespan, opening a new horizon for the future development of bioinspired marine antifouling coatings.

Environmental concentrations of antifouling paint particles are toxic to sediment-dwelling invertebrates

Christina Muller-Karanassos et al.

Summary: The study found that modern biocidal antifouling paint particles (APPs) have the potential to adversely affect the health of benthic organisms, particularly the harbour ragworm and the common cockle. Harbour ragworms have higher tolerance to modern APPs, while common cockles are more sensitive. The results highlight the need for stricter regulations on the disposal of APP waste from boatyards and marinas.

Tissue-specific distribution and bioaccumulation of cyclic and linear siloxanes in South Korean crucian carp (carassius carassius)

Wenting Wang et al.

Summary: Cyclic siloxanes, especially D5, showed a high bioaccumulative property in biota, with concentrations higher in fish tissues compared to river water and sediment. Linear siloxanes, on the other hand, exhibited higher distribution in crucian carp tissues and greater transportability to fish tissues than cyclic siloxanes.

Fouling resistant silicone coating with self-healing induced by metal coordination

Peng Hu et al.

Summary: The new poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating cross-linked via coordination bonds between 2-(2-benzimidazolyl)ethanethiol (BET) and zinc ions shows improved adhesion strength and self-healing ability, leading to enhanced fouling resistance against marine bacteria and diatoms. The presence of zinc-imidazole complexes further contributes to the antifouling function of the coating.

Characterization of hazards and environmental risks of wastewater effluents from ship hull cleaning by hydroblasting

Zhi Yang Soon et al.

Summary: Effluents generated from hydroblasting contain high concentrations of copper and zinc, posing harmful effects on marine organisms. Model predictions suggest that effluent discharge from hydroblasting can pose risks to the wider marine environment, requiring management and regulation based on specific risk assessments.
