Levels and trends of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in water (2013-2020) and fish from selected riverine basins in Spain

Jose L. Roscales et al.

Summary: The study assessed the presence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in Spanish river basins, finding significant increases in PFAA concentrations in water and fish with population density, indicating urban areas as their main source. While a decreasing trend for PFOS and PFOA in water was suggested, significant trends were only confirmed at two sampling sites.

Perfluoroalkyl substances in water, sediment, and fish from a subtropical river of China: Environmental behaviors and potential risk

Siquan Wang et al.

Summary: PFAS concentrations in the Jiulong River water showed seasonal variations, with higher levels during the dry season. Long chain PFAS exhibited high bioconcentration factors (BCFs), while short and medium carbon chain PFAS had weak bioconcentration capacity. The hazard ratios (HR) suggested that frequent consumption of river fish may pose health risks to local population.

Distribution of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water, sediment, and fish tissue, and the potential human health risks due to fish consumption in Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia

Bealemlay Abebe Melake et al.

Summary: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely distributed in Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia, with potential risks to human health, especially for those who consume a large amount of fish. Although consuming contaminated fish based on average concentrations does not pose health risks, people who regularly consume fish may face health risks from PFAS contamination.

Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Fish from European Lakes: Current Contamination Status, Sources, and Perspectives for Monitoring

Sara Valsecchi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the concentrations of perfluorocarboxylic and perfluorosulfonic acids in fish from several lakes in the European subalpine area. The results suggest that PFAS contamination in lake fish is generally correlated with the degree of urbanization of the lake catchment, and the possibility of harmonizing monitoring protocols was tested.

Temporal Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Delaware River Fish, USA

A. Ronald MacGillivray

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are commonly found in industrial and household products, leading to widespread human and wildlife exposure. Research on PFAS in fish fillet from the Delaware River showed reductions in some concentrations but continued contamination with PFOS exceeding recommended limits.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Determination of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Craft Villages and Industrial Environments of Vietnam

Thi Vi Phung et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the levels of PFASs in wastewater from craft villages and industrial areas in Vietnam. Results showed higher concentrations of PFOS in industrial wastewater and PFOA and PFHxA in textile wastewater compared to the control area. The dominant PFASs in surface water from craft villages were PFOA, PFHxA, and PFOS, posing environmental risks mainly at extremely low to low levels.

Trends (2005-2016) of perfluoroalkyl acids in top predator fish of the Laurentian Great Lakes

Adam D. Point et al.

Summary: This study assesses the temporal trends of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in top predator fish of the Laurentian Great Lakes from 2005 to 2016, showing a general decrease in individual analyte concentrations basin-wide, with some exceptions. The exceptions, such as constant or increasing concentrations in Lake Superior and Lake Erie fish, may be attributed to shoreline development and contamination from agriculture. Data limitations prevent confirmation of these suspected causes.

Adverse outcome pathway in immunotoxicity of perfluoroalkyls

Monica Neagu et al.

Summary: PFAS are synthetic compounds produced since the 1940s, found in environment and most consumer products including food and drinking water. Epidemiological studies have shown potential immunotoxicity and neurotoxicity effects of PFAS, with long-term exposure impacting various organisms and human health. Future research can utilize adverse outcome pathways to predict adverse effects of PFAS exposure on humans and understand interspecies circulation of these compounds.
