Response of large benthic foraminifera to climate and local changes: Implications for future carbonate production

Gita R. Narayan et al.

Summary: Large benthic foraminifera play significant roles in tropical coral reef environments, serving as important carbonate producers and indicators of environmental change. Their calcareous tests contribute to sediment supply after the organisms die, maintaining shoreline stability. Studies suggest these organisms may exhibit increased tolerance to a wide range of conditions, but more research is needed to fully understand their response to changing ocean conditions and climate regimes.

Mid-Cretaceous thick carbonate accumulation in Northern Lhasa (Tibet): eustatic vs. tectonic control?

Yiwei Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the accumulation and formation mechanism of carbonates in the northern Lhasa terrane during the mid-Cretaceous. Through detailed sedimentological and stratigraphic investigation, three stages of paleogeographic evolution were identified. The study emphasizes the eustatic control on the evolution, modulated by tectonic subsidence and carbonate productivity.

The Orbitolina Limestone of central Iran: new data about microfacies, orbitolinid biostratigraphy, and palaeogeography

Felix Schlagintweit et al.

Summary: A section of the Lower Cretaceous Taft Formation in Central Iran provides new data on microfacies, orbitolinid biostratigraphy, and palaeogeographic setting. The section shows deposition in an open marine external carbonate platform environment and is characterized by the presence of corals, stromatoporoids, and small benthic foraminifera. The study also reveals slight modifications to widely used orbitolinid biozonations and demonstrates the need for plausibility check when transferring data to other regions. Additionally, the observed orbitolinid assemblages indicate a diachronous base of the Taft Formation.

Biostratigraphy of Albian Sediments (Kazhdumi Formation) in Zagros Area (Southwest of Iran)

Mojtaba Keshavarzi et al.

Summary: The research in the Zagros Basin on the biostratigraphy of Albian sediments revealed well-developed orbitolinids associated with other foraminifers, as well as the presence of planktons indicating vertical displacement in the sedimentary basin during Albian time. The study also identified pelagic foraminifera in the Kazhdumi Formation, suggesting basement faulting during the Albian period.

New biostratigraphic observations of planktonic foraminifera and ammonites on the Aptian-Albian intrashelf succession, Zagros Basin, SW Iran

Javad Shari et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphic framework for the Aptian-Albian sedimentary succession in SW Iran, along with supporting ammonite data. It proposes five new biozones and suggests the location of the Aptian/Albian boundary within a narrow interval marked by faunal turnover. The biozonation of the studied section is considered an important step towards better understanding the biotic and global changes across the Aptian/Albian boundary.
