Multi-omics analysis reveals metabolism of okadaic acid in gut lumen of rat

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Okadaic acid (OA) on the metabolism of gut bacteria in rats were analyzed using a multi-omics strategy and rRNA high-throughput technology. The study found that OA had significant effects on gut bacteria, causing changes in dominant genera and bacterial function genes. It was also discovered that OA could be transformed into other metabolites, such as dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX-2), in the gut. The findings provide important insights into the complex toxicity of OA and its environmental fate.

Mitigation of marine toxins by interactions with bacteria: The case of okadaic acid and tetrodotoxin

Francesco Martelli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of lactic acid bacteria and Paracoccus spp. to reduce OA and TTX toxins, finding different mechanisms of action among different bacterial species. Some lactic acid bacteria were able to significantly reduce toxin levels in their viable state, while Paracoccus spp. showed a reduction in toxin levels in a cell-free extract form.

Nutrient supply controls the linkage between species abundance and ecological interactions in marine bacterial communities

Tianjiao Dai et al.

Summary: Nutrient scarcity has a significant impact on natural microbial communities. The ribosomal RNA gene operon (rrn) copy number is associated with bacterial growth rate and nutrient demand. The abundance of rrn copy number differs between nutrient-rich coastal sediment and nutrient-scarce pelagic zone of the global ocean. Positive correlations between community-level rrn copy number and nutrients are observed. Furthermore, inter-species co-exclusion is more apparent in coastal sediment than in ocean water samples.

Influence of the co-exposure of microplastics and tetrabromobisphenol A on human gut: Simulation in vitro with human cell Caco-2 and gut microbiota

Wantang Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that both PEMPs and TBBPA have detrimental effects on Caco-2 cells, with TBBPA playing a major role and high concentrations of PEMPs also affecting cell viability. TBBPA selectively inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria, leading to shifts in microbiota composition that are unfavorable for gut health. The interference of PEMPs and TBBPA also alters metabolism pathways of gut microbiota, highlighting the potential threat to human health.
