Source rock classification, maturity and their implications in paleoenvironment reconstruction in the Zhu III sub-basin, China

Zhitong He et al.

Summary: In this study, the source rocks in the Zhu III sub-basin of the Pearl River Mouth Basin were classified and interpreted based on organic geochemical data, and the biomarker indexes for evaluating maturity of the source rocks were optimized. This research provides an important foundation for oil source correlation and hydrocarbon exploration, and it can also serve as a reference for the division and evaluation of source rocks in offshore lacustrine basins worldwide.

Formation of the First Bend in the late Eocene gave birth to the modern Yangtze River, China

Hongbo Zheng et al.

Summary: The formation of the First Bend of the Yangtze River is closely related to the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau, with evidence from the paleo-Jinshajiang River indicating a southern source originating in the Tibetan Plateau flowing into the South China Sea. This diversion of the river towards the northeast due to tectonic movements ultimately led to the creation of the modern Yangtze River.

Fingerprinting sand from Asian rivers to the deep central South China Sea since the Late Miocene

Licheng Cao et al.

Summary: Through heavy mineral and detrital zircon analyses, researchers have revealed the complex source-to-sink system of sandy turbidite deposits in the deep central South China Sea, showing more complex and dynamic scenarios than previously envisioned. The study found that multiple source areas have been mixed and diluted during sediment transport, exhibiting significant regional variability. The results indicate that the siliciclastic turbidite deposits in the central South China Sea were mainly derived from East Vietnam during the early Late Miocene and Pliocene, and the Pearl River Basin during the late Late Miocene and Pleistocene.

Sedimentary evolution and controlling factors of Early-Mid Miocene Deltaic systems in the Northern Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea

Yanru Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and evolution of fluvial-deltaic depositional systems in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, finding that the paleo-Pearl River transported a large amount of sediments to the northwest of the basin during the early Miocene, resulting in the formation of a large-scale river-delta depositional system. This system was mainly controlled by sea level change, tectonic subsidence, and sediment supply.

Insights into evolution of a rift basin: Provenance of the middle Eocene-lower Oligocene strata of the Beibuwan Basin, South China Sea from detrital zircon

Yin Gong et al.

Summary: Investigating the Beibuwan Basin in the South China Sea has shown that its provenance underwent significant changes during the lower Oligocene, indicating the influence of evolving topography and drainage evolution on sediment sources in rift basins.
