Using Nanoindentation to Characterize the Mechanical and Creep Properties of Shale: Load and Loading Strain Rate Effects

Jianfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the mechanical and creep properties of shale at the microscale through nanoindentation tests and evaluated their dependence on the indentation test parameters. The study found that the mechanical parameters of shale were strongly influenced by the indentation load, while the loading strain rate had a smaller impact. Furthermore, the study showed that increasing the load or decreasing the loading strain rate can increase creep deformation in shale.

High-speed nanoindentation mapping of organic matter-rich rocks: A critical evaluation by correlative imaging and machine learning data analysis

S. Vranjes-Wessely et al.

Summary: Nanoindentation is a valuable tool for studying the material properties of complex natural materials like shales and organic matter-rich rocks, but extracting representative material parameters for organic matter can be complicated due to their inherent complexity. A study from the Chinese Songliao Basin extracted hardness and reduced elastic modulus values for over-mature samples, and evaluated influencing factors on the resulting parameters through high-speed nanoindentation mapping and imaging methods. The study showed that the heterogeneity of organic matter significantly affects the data scattering and the mechanical behavior of OM in rock formations.

Pore evolution model and diagenetic evolution sequence of the Mesoproterozoic Xiamaling shale in Zhangjiakou, Hebei

Liangwei Xu et al.

Summary: Research on diagenesis and evolution in sandstone reservoirs is more prevalent compared to shale reservoirs, particularly immature and low-maturity marine shales. This study focused on the Xiamaling shale, analyzing its geochemical and mineral properties, pore structure, and evolution with burial history. The findings showed a sequence of smectite to illite-smectite to illite and chlorite, with decreasing kaolinite content as maturity increases, as well as changes in hydrocarbon expulsion threshold and porosity evolution.

AFM vs. Nanoindentation: Nanomechanical properties of organic-rich Shale

Lingyun Kong et al.

Summary: This study compares the feasibility of using force spectroscopy methods and nanoindentation techniques to obtain elastic properties of shale. It was found that the modulus range in nanoindentation data is larger, but it becomes more difficult to identify organic matter from intermediary phases as thermal maturity increases. In contrast, AFM provides higher resolution modulus maps, allowing for more accurate distinction between different phases.
