Record Productivity and Unprecedented Molecular Weight for Ring-Opening Copolymerization of Epoxides and Cyclic Anhydrides Enabled by Organoboron Catalysts

Rui Xie et al.

Summary: A metal-free, highly active, and high thermoresistance system for the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides to prepare polyesters has been developed. The catalysts can endure high reaction temperatures without side reactions, leading to high molecular weight polyesters with low polydispersity. This system achieved an unprecedented efficiency and turnover number, supported by kinetic studies, crystal structure analysis, B-11 NMR spectra, and DFT calculations.
