When Polymer Chains Are Highly Aligned: A Perspective on Extensional Rheology

Qian Huang

Summary: This article provides a perspective on recent findings in extensional rheology for polymer melts and solutions with different macromolecular architectures. It focuses on the argument of flow-induced friction reduction for linear polymer systems, understanding how to control extensional viscosity for branched polymers, and summarizes recent progress in extensional rheology for ring polymers. The article emphasizes the importance of more data from both experiments and simulations for improving the fundamental understanding and development of theories in molecular design of polymer materials.

Tuning High and Low Temperature Foaming Behavior of Linear and Long-Chain Branched Polypropylene via Partial and Complete Melting

Mu Sung Kweon et al.

Summary: This study investigates the foamability of linear and branched polypropylene (PP) resins using two different melting methods. The results show that at high temperatures, both methods yield similar expansion ratios, with the PP resin with higher strain hardening ratio exhibiting the highest expansion ratio. However, at low temperatures, Method 2 significantly improves the foamability of all resins and results in a more uniform cellular structure over a wider temperature range.

ALTERNATIVE USE OF THE SENTMANAT EXTENSIONAL RHEOMETER TO INVESTIGATE THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF INDUSTRIAL RUBBERS AT VERY LARGE DEFORMATIONS

Daniele Parisi et al.

Summary: This study presents an alternative method for investigating the behavior of polymers under large deformations using the Sentmanat Extensional Rheometer (SER). By obliquely positioning the sample, larger Hencky strain units can be achieved. The experimental results in the linear viscoelastic regime are compared with the double reptation model, while the extensional rheology data are contrasted with the molecular stress function theory (MSF), providing important information about the polymer structure.

Effect of Side Chain Length in Polystyrene POM-POMs on Melt Rheology and Solid Mechanical Fatigue

Marie-Christin Roepert et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rheological and mechanical properties of POM-POM-shaped polystyrenes (PS) with different side chain lengths. It shows that POM-POMs with specific side chain lengths exhibit a significant decrease in viscosity and strain hardening, along with enhanced mechanical fatigue resistance.

Rheological Measurements and Structural Analysis of Polymeric Materials

Helmut Muenstedt

Summary: Rheological measurements of polymer melts are essential for quality control and understanding molecular parameters and structure build-up in polymeric systems. This paper discusses the influence of molar mass, distribution, and long-chain branching on rheological characteristics and their applications in analyzing thermal stability. The study also examines the impact of fillers on recoverable properties and the state of nanoparticle dispersions, demonstrating the importance of these findings in analyzing heterogeneous polymeric materials.
