The commonly applied Brey model to estimate benthic secondary production cannot be used for communities dominated by large bivalves

J. J. Beukema et al.

Summary: The Brey model, commonly used to calculate secondary production, has been found to underestimate production in bivalve communities where dominant species exist. This study compared production values obtained by two methods and found that the Brey estimates were significantly lower than the direct estimates in most cases, especially in years with dominant species. This suggests that the Brey model may not be suitable for accurately estimating production in ecosystems dominated by certain species.
