Green synthesis, characterization and applications of iron and zinc nanoparticles by probiotics

Andrea Gomez-Zavaglia et al.

Summary: Microorganisms, particularly probiotic bacteria, have great potential in synthesizing metal nanoparticles. While silver, gold, titanium, and selenium nanoparticles have been extensively studied, the synthesis of iron and zinc nanoparticles by probiotics has received less attention. Understanding the synthesis processes, mechanisms, and characterization of these nanoparticles is crucial due to the nutritional relevance of iron and zinc. Moreover, products containing probiotics and minerals have diverse applications in various industries, making them a powerful economic strategy.

ZnO Nanostructures Application in Electrochemistry: Influence of Morphology

Agne Sulciute et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of morphology on the electrochemical properties of ZnO nanostructures, comparing tetrapods of different sizes, nanorods, and nanoparticles. The analysis revealed that large ZnO tetrapods had the highest active surface area and lowest peak separation value, close to theoretical values. It is established that the pore size in different ZnO nanostructures due to packing correlates with their electrochemical properties.

Fabrication of chitosan-based functional nanocomposite films: Effect of quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles

Swarup Roy et al.

Summary: Quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (QCNP) were prepared using a simple one-pot chemical reaction and incorporated into chitosan-based bioactive packaging films with excellent UV blocking properties. The addition of QCNP influenced the physical properties of the films and enhanced the release of quercetin under acidic and alcoholic conditions, showing potent antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The developed chitosan/QCNP-based films have promising applications in active food packaging.

A paradoxical role of reactive oxygen species in cancer signaling pathway: Physiology and pathology

Vaikundamoorthy Ramalingam et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential products in cells, playing a key role in the initiation and regulation of cancer signaling pathways. Controlling the levels of ROS can influence various signaling pathways associated with tumorigenesis, and elevated ROS levels are known markers for cancer, while reduced levels contribute to cell survival and invasion.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

The role of P53 up-regulated modulator of apoptosis (PUMA) in ovarian development, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases

Mei Li

Summary: PUMA, a pro-apoptotic member of the BCL-2 family, is a direct transcriptional target of P53 and plays a critical role in various cell apoptotic processes, including ovarian development and cardiovascular neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies have shown that PUMA-mediated apoptotic pathways contribute to understanding the regulation of cell death mechanisms.

Quercetin attenuates metastatic ability of human metastatic ovarian cancer cells via modulating multiple signaling molecules involved in cell survival, proliferation, migration and adhesion

Teekaraman Dhanaraj et al.

Summary: Research has shown that quercetin inhibits the survival and proliferation of human metastatic ovarian cancer cells by inactivating PI3K/Akt, Ras/Raf pathways, and EGFR expression. It also alters N-cadherin expression, decreases gelatinase secretion and MMP-2/-9 gene expression, and inhibits migration and adhesion of the cancer cells. These findings suggest that quercetin could be a valuable therapeutic drug for the treatment and prevention of metastatic ovarian cancer.

Necroptosis, pyroptosis and apoptosis: an intricate game of cell death

Damien Bertheloot et al.

Summary: Cell death is a fundamental physiological process in all living organisms, playing important roles in embryonic development, organ maintenance, aging, immune responses, and autoimmunity. Recent research has significantly increased our understanding of the mechanisms orchestrating different types of programmed cell death and how they affect the balance of cell fates. Various modalities of cell death, such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis, have been studied to highlight both common and unique pathways and their impact on the surrounding cells and the organism as a whole.

Human Prostate Epithelial Cells Activate the AIM2 Inflammasome upon Cellular Senescence: Role of POP3 Protein in Aging-Related Prostatic Inflammation

Ravichandran Panchanathan et al.

Summary: Increased levels of POP3 protein induced by type I interferon inhibit activation of the AIM2 inflammasome in myeloid cells, leading to reduced production of IL-1 beta and IL-18 proinflammatory cytokines. Aging-related benign prostate hyperplasia is associated with higher levels of AIM2 mRNA and activation of inflammasomes in senescent epithelial cells. The androgen receptor and male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone can modulate the expression of POP3 protein in prostate epithelial cells and inhibit AIM2 inflammasome activation.
