3D Chiral MetaCrystals

Marco Esposito et al.

Summary: The fine control of chiral light-matter interaction at the nanoscale using designed metamaterial architecture is a cutting-edge craft with applications in biosensing, quantum, and classic nanophotonics. A novel concept of a 3D chiral metacrystal is proposed, where chiroptical properties are finely tuned by in-plane and out-of-plane diffractive coupling, showing potential for enantiomeric detection and integration with quantum emitters.

Terahertz spin-selective perfect absorption enabled by quasi-bound states in the continuum

Zhonglei Shen et al.

Summary: A terahertz chiral metasurface with a single-layer structure is proposed and demonstrated numerically based on a stereoscopic full metallic resonator array in this work. By using a coupled-mode theory, it is shown that the chiral metasurface can exhibit near-perfect absorption of one circularly polarized wave and non-resonant reflection of its counterparts in the quasi-bound states in the continuum-induced critical coupling region. The linewidths and handedness of the chiral metasurface can be flexibly controlled by an in-plane symmetry perturbation.

Dual-band selective circular dichroism in mid-infrared chiral metasurfaces

Haotian Tang et al.

Summary: This article presents the design and demonstration of mid-infrared chiral metamaterials and metasurfaces with dual-wavelength CD selectivity. The mechanism of dual-band CD selection is related to the bonding and antibonding modes in the coupled bars, which can be controlled and flipped by adjusting geometric parameters. These results are significant for future mid-infrared applications.

Summary: In this paper, a generic strategy based on dynamic chiral meta-atom is proposed for achieving strong circular dichroism and applicable electromagnetic functionality. Feasibility is demonstrated through numerical simulation and experimental verification. The proposed strategy is expected to broaden the horizon for dynamic chiral meta-devices and find applications in information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and other dynamic systems.

Tailoring the spectral properties of layered chiral mid-infrared metamaterials

H. R. Barnard et al.

Summary: The characteristics of four-layer chiral metamaterials, optically active in the mid-infrared region, have been studied through simulations and experiments. The spectral response of the materials can be tailored while maintaining the magnitude of circular dichroism relative to standard double layer metamaterials. Analysis shows that these four-layer structures offer greater design freedom in coupling than expected from simple consideration of double layer structures.

Coherent Chiral-Selective Absorption and Wavefront Manipulation in Single-Layer Metasurfaces

Ziying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a chiral-selective metasurface absorber using a single-layer free-standing metasurface and coherent control method, actively tuning the strength of chiral-selective behavior by changing the phase difference between two coherent inputs. It achieves near unity absorption for one circularly polarized incidence and high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion for the other circularly polarized incidence. This approach enriches functionalities and improves the performance of conventional single-layer metasurfaces, with potential applications in various practical cases.

Plasmonic topological metasurface by encircling an exceptional point

Qinghua Song et al.

Summary: By exploiting the topological features of non-Hermitian matrices near singular points, an additional degree of freedom was introduced to address optical phase engineering in optical metasurfaces. Choosing metasurface building blocks to encircle a singularity allowed for the engineered full 2π-phase on a specific reflected polarization channel with topological protection. The ease of implementation and compatibility with other phase-addressing mechanisms demonstrate the industrial applicability of topological properties in metasurface technology at optical frequencies.

Bound States in the Continuum Underpin Near-Lossless Maximum Chirality in Dielectric Metasurfaces

Summary: The study shows that metasurfaces without mirror symmetry can exhibit chiral electromagnetic response, outperforming rotationally symmetric counterparts to achieve near-lossless maximum chirality. By employing high-quality-factor resonances and a special type of BICs, the coupling of light with resonant metasurfaces can be engineered to achieve maximum chirality. Proof-of-concept experimental results confirm the prediction of maximum chiral response of the BIC-empowered asymmetric resonant dielectric metasurfaces.
