Nanoelectrochemical quantification of single-cell metabolism

Hadley K. McCormick et al.

Summary: At a fundamental level, tissue behavior is controlled by the activity of individual cells. While genomics and transcriptomics of single cells are advanced, quantification of the metabolome remains challenging. Nanoelectrochemical techniques offer a way to measure single-cell metabolism using nanoelectrodes, enabling sensitive and selective detection of metabolites. This article discusses the potential applications and challenges of intracellular nanoelectrochemistry, providing insights into the consumption of analytes within cells through the passage of charge.

Charge transfer across C-H•••O hydrogen bonds stabilizes oil droplets in water

Saranya Pullanchery et al.

Summary: The study found an unusually broad spectral distribution of interfacial water molecules and a blue shift in the vibrational frequency of interfacial hexadecane C-H stretch modes. The frequency shifts of oil and water were correlated with the negative electrostatic charge.

Electrochemical quantification of accelerated FADGDH rates in aqueous nanodroplets

Kathryn J. Vannoy et al.

Summary: Enzymes trapped in submicrometer water nanodroplets suspended in 1,2-dichloroethane exhibit a significant enhancement in reaction rate, with enzymatic activity observed when single nanodroplets irreversibly adsorb onto an ultramicroelectrode surface. By integrating the current-time response and using Faraday's Law, the relationship between enzyme activity and nanodroplet size could be studied, providing insights into parameters influencing single nanodroplet enzymology.

Reaction Acceleration Promoted by Partial Solvation at the Gas/Solution Interface

Lingqi Qiu et al.

Summary: The kinetics of organic reactions in microvolumes are influenced by factors such as gas/solution interfacial area, reaction molecularity, and solvent polarity. Partial solvation at the gas/solution interface significantly accelerates bimolecular reactions in microdroplets, and this reaction acceleration can be controlled by selecting an appropriate solvent for manipulating selectivity.
