Ice-Shedding Polymer Coatings with High Hardness but Low Ice Adhesion

Haili Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a bilayer coating with high hardness and low ice adhesion. The coating is prepared by cocuring triisocyanate and methacrylate polyol, resulting in a hard matrix. The surface of the coating is covered by a PDMS brush layer, which, when lubricated with silicone oil, reduces ice adhesion. This design allows for effective ice shedding and maintains low ice adhesion values for multiple icing/deicing cycles.

Design of Icephobic Surfaces by Lowering Ice Adhesion Strength: A Mini Review

Zhiwei He et al.

Summary: Ice accretion can have severe consequences in daily life and sometimes lead to catastrophic events. Passive icephobic surfaces have gained attention for their ability to repel water droplets, suppress ice nucleation, and lower ice adhesion strength. The key to outdoor anti-icing applications is living with ice but with the lowest ice adhesion strength, achieved through various types of icephobic surfaces.

Designing Anti-Icing Surfaces by Controlling Ice Formation

Xiaoteng Zhou et al.

Summary: Understanding the formation of ice on surfaces from supercooled water is important for anti-icing surfaces. Factors like crystal lattice match, charge, and ions play a critical role in ice nucleation. Recent research on distinct ice growth patterns on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces provides insights for designing icephobic surfaces.
