Cationic gemini surfactant properties, its potential as a promising bioapplication candidate, and strategies for improving its biocompatibility: A review

Azin Rashidy Ahmady et al.

Summary: Gemini surfactants, composed of two cationic monomers linked together, have high surface activity and can decrease water surface tension due to their unique structure. They possess outstanding properties, such as antibacterial activity, unique aggregation behavior, and interaction with biomacromolecules. These properties can be tailored by adjusting the structure of the surfactant. Gemini surfactants demonstrate higher performance efficacy and lower toxicity compared to their monomeric counterparts. However, biocompatibility remains a limitation, leading researchers to develop alternative gemini surfactants based on amino acids and sugars.

Absorption of the [bmim][Cl] Ionic Liquid in DMPC Lipid Bilayers across Their Gel, Ripple, and Fluid Phases

Antonio Benedetto et al.

Summary: Lipid bilayers are essential for cell membranes and have potential applications in bio-nanotechnology. This study focuses on the absorption of ionic liquids (ILs) into lipid bilayers and found that IL cations are absorbed in all phases of the lipid bilayer, with the amount of IL insertion increasing with temperature. The observed temperature trend can be explained by the entropy gain from IL hydration water. The ability to control IL absorption with temperature can be utilized to modulate the effect of ILs on biomembranes in bio-nanotechnological applications.

1,3 Dialkylated Imidazolium Ionic Liquid Causes Interdigitated Domains in a Phospholipid Membrane

Ritika Gupta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of amphiphilic imidazolium-based ionic liquids on the membrane integrity and dynamics of a DPPC membrane. The results show that the addition of the imidazolium ionic liquid leads to the formation of phase-separated domains and enhances the fluidity of the lipid bilayer.

Structural effects of amino acid-based ionic liquids on thermophysical properties, and antibacterial and cytotoxic activity

Thaissa S. Beck et al.

Summary: Amino acid-based ionic liquids exhibit specific properties in thermal stability, heat capacity, antimicrobial activity, and cytotoxicity. It was found in the study that amino acid-based anions can reduce the thermal stability of mono and dicationic AAILs, and AAILs with more carbon chains have lower glass transition temperature.

Role of cationic head-group in cytotoxicity of ionic liquids: Probing changes in bilayer architecture using solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Navleen Kaur et al.

Summary: The effect of cationic head-group of ionic liquid on the structure and dynamics of phospholipid bilayer was studied using six different ionic liquids. Different cations showed varying impact on the orientation and disorder in lipid head-group, as well as lipid chain dynamics in the bilayer. These results suggest a correlation between structural changes induced by ionic liquid head-group and membrane disruption.

Partitioning of a Hybrid Lipid in Domains of Saturated and Unsaturated Lipids in a Model Cellular Membrane

Prashant Hitaishi et al.

Summary: This study reveals that hybrid lipids can preferentially mix into unsaturated lipids, reducing Gibbs free energy, while the mixing is unfavorable in saturated lipids. The presence of hybrid lipids in unsaturated lipids leads to an increase in area fraction and enhanced correlation length in multi-layered samples. However, there is only a weak effect on the domain structure of saturated lipids due to the presence of hybrid lipids at the phase boundary.

Summary: This study introduces imidazolium-based dicationic ILs with dicarboxylate anions, showing that DILs with a ten-carbon alkyl chain spacer are active against yeasts and tested bacterial strains, but most are toxic. DILs with less than ten carbons in the alkyl chain show activity against specific fungi and bacteria with moderate cytotoxicity.

The distinct effects of two imidazolium-based ionic liquids, [C4mim][OAc] and [C6mim][OAc], on the phase behaviours of DPPC

Xiao-Lei Hao et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids are potential green solvents with broad application prospects, but their toxicity is largely related to their hydrophobic properties. This study explored the effects of two imidazolium-based ILs on the phase behaviors of a representative phospholipid. It found that [C(4)mim][OAc] had limited effects, while [C(6)mim][OAc] could significantly affect the lipid's main phase transition and form an interdigitated gel phase.
