Summary: This study compares patient-reported outcomes after isolated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R), isolated posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (PCL-R), and combined ACL-R and PCL-R (ACL/PCL-R) at a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The results suggest that all treatment groups show clinically relevant improvements in knee function, with the greatest improvements seen in the function in sport and recreation subscale.

Clinical Outcomes and Osteoarthritis at Very Long-term Follow-up After ACL Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the outcomes and incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using different techniques at a minimum 20-year follow-up. The results showed that most patients had satisfactory subjective outcomes 20 years after ACLR, but approximately 10% experienced laxity issues. The operated knee had an increased risk of OA compared to the contralateral knee. Risk factors for long-term OA included male sex, older age, delayed surgery, concomitant meniscal or cartilage injuries, and postoperative complications.

The results showed that the causes of injury differed among the patient groups, with PCL tears commonly caused by both traffic and sports, while ACL tears were mostly sports-related. Cartilage and ligament injuries were more frequent in PCL reconstruction patients compared to ACL reconstruction patients.
