Room to roam for African lions Panthera leo: a review of the key drivers of lion habitat use and implications for conservation

Rebecca Sargent et al.

Summary: Research on habitat preferences of African lions demonstrates behavioral plasticity in response to factors such as prey abundance and proximity to water. The focus of studies has been predominantly on protected or managed areas, indicating a need for future research outside of these areas to better understand how lions adapt to human-dominated landscapes.

Environmental and anthropogenic factors synergistically affect space use of jaguars

Jeffrey J. Thompson et al.

Summary: Large terrestrial carnivores, especially the jaguar, have experienced significant population declines and range reductions. The management of jaguars depends on multi-national cooperation to maintain core populations connected throughout their range. A study using GPS data on jaguars showed that home range size decreased with increasing productivity and forest cover, and increased with higher road density. Speed decreased with more forest cover and males had more directional movements, indicating a relationship between landscape factors and jaguars' spatial needs.
