Geomorphological, morphometric, and spatial distribution analysis of the scoria cones in the Negros de Aras monogenetic volcanic field, northern Chile

Mauricio Aguilera et al.

Summary: The Negros de Aras volcanic field in northern Chile is characterized by a high concentration of scoria cones. The field contains 66 vents, consisting of lava flows and typical scoria cones. The distribution and morphology of the cones are influenced by local and regional structural elements. The cones display a wide range of morphologies and morphometries related to different eruptive processes.

Effusion rate estimation based on solidified lava flows: Implications for volcanic hazard assessment in the Negros de Aras monogenetic volcanic field, northern Chile

Matias Vilches et al.

Summary: Effusion rate is a crucial factor in understanding and predicting the behavior of lava flows. This study estimated the effusion rates of lava flows in the Negros de Aras volcanic field using modeling techniques and compared the results with real measurements for validation. The findings provide valuable insights for mitigating volcanic risks in the area.

Characterization, origin, and evolution of one of the most eroded mafic monogenetic fields within the central Andes: The case of El Pais lava flow field, northern Chile

Ivana Torres et al.

Summary: El Pais is a monogenetic lava flow field located in the Antofagasta region of Chile, composed of small-to-moderate volume lava flows fed from individual point sources. The lava flow field can be divided into Northern-, Main-, and Western-lava flows, displaying an E-W orientation. The eruptive products are geochemically basaltic andesite and andesite, making it one of the most mafic lava flow fields in the broader region.

Explosivity of basaltic lava fountains is controlled by magma rheology, ascent rate and outgassing

G. La Spina et al.

Summary: The study uses a numerical model to investigate the controls on basaltic eruption style, focusing on Kilauea and Etna as case studies. Results suggest that lava fountaining is a distinct style, separate from effusive and explosive eruption styles. High lava fountains occur when the bubbly magma's Reynolds number is greater than approximately 0.1 and the bulk viscosity is less than 10(6) Pas.

Sr isotopes and geochemistry of Cerro Overo maar provide a unique window into arc magma genesis in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes

B. van Alderwerelt et al.

Summary: The Cerro Overo maar in the Central Andes is the most mafic lava found within the modern subduction arc, preserving signals from deep-crustal or upper mantle magmatism. Researchers have debated whether the enriched isotope ratios in this region are from the mantle source or crustal processes. The Olivine-hosted melt inclusions provide evidence that the radiogenic isotopic characteristic of the region results from lithospheric processes rather than inheritance.

A window on mantle-derived magmas within the Central Andes: eruption style transitions at Cerro Overo maar and La Albondiga lava dome, northern Chile

Gabriel Ureta et al.

Summary: Cerro Overo maar and La Albondiga lava dome are two independent monogenetic volcanoes located in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes in northern Chile. They were formed less than 77,000 years ago and in the Pleistocene, characterized by explosive and effusive eruptions, with magmatic evolution influenced by fast ascent of mantle-derived magma, mixing, fractional crystallization, and low crustal assimilation. These eruptions provide evidence for the transition from explosive-effusive to phreatomagmatic volcanic eruption styles.

Paleomagnetism and 40Ar/39Ar chronology of ignimbrites and lava flows, Central Volcanic Zone, Northern Chile

Laurie Brown et al.

Summary: This study presents new 40Ar/39Ar ages and paleomagnetic data from a variety of ignimbrites and lava flows in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, east of the Atacama Desert in Chile. The ignimbrites range in age from 4.2 Ma to 0.5 Ma, while the lava flows have ages ranging from 3.5 Ma to 0.1 Ma, with significant differences in paleomagnetic directions between the two rock types. The research also shows that the paleosecular variation in magnetic field direction at the study sites is larger than current models predicted.

Summary: This research explores the influence of interpolation parameters in the inverse distance-weighted interpolation algorithm on DEM interpolation error. Through experimental analysis, optimal interpolation parameters have been identified, and it is noted that different terrain areas require different smoothing factors for enhanced interpolation accuracy.
