Effects of ballistic impact damage on mechanical behaviour of composite honeycomb sandwich panels

B. Aryal et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of ballistic impact damage on the mechanical behavior of composite honeycomb sandwich panels through ballistic tests and experimental analysis, evaluating the damage modes and extent using various methods. Structural performance of intact and damaged panels is studied through in-plane compression tests and numerical analysis, assessing the reduction in load-carrying ability caused by ballistic damage and comparing it with numerical simulations.

A numerical study on the influence of quasi-isotropic structures on the ballistic performance of para-aramid woven composites

Hang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explores the ballistic performance and mechanisms of para-aramid/epoxy composites with quasi-isotropic structures. The results show improved energy absorption, increased stress dissipation, and enlarged deformation areas, leading to better ballistic performance compared to orthotropic composites. The research fills the gap in understanding the application of quasi-isotropic woven composites for ballistic protections.

Manufacturing of dilatant fluid embodied Kevlar-Glass-hybrid-3D-fabric sandwich composite panels for the enhancement of ballistic impact resistance

Victor Avisek Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The study explores the effect of dilatant fluids in sandwich composite panels, showing significant enhancement in energy absorption capabilities. By utilizing novel manufacturing techniques for SCP and incorporating dilatant fluids into the core, higher absorbed energy and improved energy dissipation properties were achieved. Results reveal that cross-sectional damage in SCPs is mainly caused by delamination, shear plugging, and fiber failure.

Unfolding the effects of tuft density on compression after impact properties in unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates

Kundan K. Verma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the post impact compressive residual strength of epoxy-based composite laminates in the presence of through-thickness reinforcement (TTR) introduced using tufting technique. Results demonstrate a significant reduction in damaged area and an increase in residual strength with increasing tuft density up to 0.56%, attributed to the bridging effect of TTR enhancing the interlaminar strength.
