Density functional theory calculations of large systems: Interplay between fragments, observables, and computational complexity

William Dawson et al.

Summary: In the past decade, advancements in computational technology have allowed for larger system sizes to be simulated using density functional theory. This has enabled computational physicists and chemists to collaborate with experimentalists and consider portions of systems as building blocks for analysis. It has also highlighted the need to bridge knowledge gaps in order to simulate increasingly realistic systems.

Relationship between diffraction peak, network topology, and amorphous-forming ability in silicon and silica

Shinji Kohara et al.

Summary: The network topology in disordered materials reveals important differences in the structure of liquid and solidified silicon compared to silica, providing insight into the amorphous-forming ability of these materials. The tetrahedral corner-sharing network of AX(2) is identified as a key motif for distinguishing between amorphous and crystalline materials in bulk elemental substances. This concept explains why silica is an amorphous former while bulk amorphous silicon cannot be prepared using melt quenching technique.
