Molecular Insights into the Mechanical Properties of Polymer-Fullerene Bulk Heterojunctions for Organic Photovoltaic Applications

Yuta Yoshimoto et al.

Summary: Through simulations, it was found that the addition of C60 increased the tensile modulus of P3HT materials by enhancing nonbonded interactions, the tensile strength of P3HT:C60 samples was closely related to molecular chain entanglements, and an increasing C60 mass fraction resulted in the generation of larger voids leading to strain softening phenomena.

Higher-order structure of polymer melt described by persistent homology

Yohei Shimizu et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of MD simulation cell size on the higher-order structure of polymers important for soft material sensor or actuator devices by using persistent homology as a topological method. The changes in higher-order structure caused by different cell size simulations affect the dielectric constant, highlighting the potential of persistent homology as a descriptor for polymer Materials Informatics.

Elucidation of pore connection mechanism during ductile fracture of sintered pure iron by applying persistent homology to 4D images of pores: Role of open pore

Isshin Ando et al.

Summary: This study utilized synchrotron X-ray laminography and persistent homology to quantitatively analyze 4D pore configurations during ductile fracturing, revealing important information at the final stage before fracturing. The configurational changes in pores can predict the connection between the open pore and surrounding closed pores, which ultimately leads to the generation of a ductile crack.

Learning-based approach to plasticity in athermal sheared amorphous packings: Improving softness

Jason W. Rocks et al.

Summary: The plasticity of amorphous solids undergoing shear is characterized by quasi-localized rearrangements of particles. The relationship between plastic dynamics and the structure of a particle's local environment remains an open question. Machine learning has been used to identify a structural predictor of rearrangements called softness, but implementing this method in experiments with limited data can be difficult. The study proposes two major improvements to the softness method, with a focus on providing simpler statistical models and more interpretable structural quantities for experimental measurement. The methods are tested on two-dimensional athermal packings of soft spheres under quasi-static shear, showing that structural information can predict both variations in response and the localization of plastic events accurately.

Impact-induced hardening in dense frictional suspensions

Pradipto et al.

Summary: The numerical study on impact-induced hardening in dense suspensions reveals distinctive features such as unaffected shear stress and the presence of a dynamically jammed region with high normal stress. Frictional interaction between suspended particles plays a crucial role in maintaining the impact-induced hardening. Persistent homology analysis successfully elucidates the topological structure of force chains.

Persistent homology in two-dimensional atomic networks

David Ormrod Morley et al.

Summary: The persistent homology analysis is used to investigate the topology of two-dimensional network materials, comparing key persistent homology metrics with more traditional metrics. Different types of networks are systematically manipulated to represent materials like silica bilayers and graphene. The method provides information on n-body correlations that is not accessible from structure factors or radial distribution functions.

Flow estimation solely from image data through persistent homology analysis

Anna Suzuki et al.

Summary: Topological data analysis is an emerging concept that utilizes persistent homology as a state-of-the-art tool to summarize topological and geometric features. This study focuses on the connectivity and apertures of flow channels detected from persistent homology analysis, proposing a method to estimate permeability in fracture networks based on these parameters. Results show that persistent homology can estimate fluid flow in fracture networks based on image data, providing a method to derive flow phenomena from structural information.
