Investigations on fiber-matrix properties of heat-treated and UV-treated regenerated cellulose fibers

Christian Kahl et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced compounds are influenced by factors such as fiber orientation, length, type, and bonding to the polymer. Adhesion between fibers and polymers can be increased through treatment, but excessive thermal and UV treatment can degrade the fiber structure and reduce the reinforcing effect.

Investigation of the Biocidal Performance of Multi-Functional Resin/Copper Nanocomposites with Superior Mechanical Response in SLA 3D Printing

Nectarios Vidakis et al.

Summary: Metals like silver, gold, and copper have biocidal properties similar to the host defense peptides of the immune system. This study focuses on using copper nanoparticles as fillers in UV-cured resin to induce biocidal properties in the material. The nanocomposites show enhanced mechanical responses compared to the neat material, and the antibacterial performance is sufficient for medical applications.

Additive manufacturing of PA12 carbon nanotube composites with a novel laser polymer deposition process

Yannick L. Wencke et al.

Summary: The facile manufacture of PA12 MWCNT/silica nanocomposite powders through a high energy mixing process enables the generation of 3D objects using Laser Polymer Deposition. The built parts exhibit mechanical properties comparable to 10%-20% of the bulk material, with main mechanical failure mechanisms identified as partially unmolten particles and voids. The mechanical properties are improved with low additive content, and electronic conductivity can be achieved through the formation of a MWCNT network.

Wood-reinforced composites by stereolithography with the stress whitening behavior

Shuyang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, poplar wood flour at different concentrations was incorporated into a methacrylate-based resin via solution blending to fabricate wood-reinforced composites using SLA 3D printing. The addition of wood flour improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the printed composites, while causing stress whitening during uniaxial drawing. This research demonstrates the potential of using wood flour in SLA 3D printed WPC to reinforce products with a modest loading amount.

Summary: Nanocomposites were fabricated with PC as the matrix material and CNF as the filler at low loadings. Optimum 3D-printing parameters were experimentally determined, showing that adding 0.5 wt.% filler provided the best performance compared to other materials tested. Mechanical tests and SEM imaging were conducted to analyze the specimens' morphology and fracture mechanism.
