Reaction between environmental barrier coatings material Er2Si2O7 and a calcia-magnesia-alumina-silica melt

Seung-Hyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The suitability of sintered erbium disilicate as an environmental barrier coating for gas turbine applications was evaluated through high-temperature corrosion tests with a synthetic CMAS melt. The two materials were found to chemically react and form an apatite phase, with the reaction layer thickness increasing with time.

Tunable corrosion resistance of rare-earth monosilicate to molten calcia-magnesia-aluminosilicate glass by RE-doping strategy

Gui Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the CMAS corrosion behavior of hot-pressed (Y1-xYbx)2SiO5 ceramics at 1573 K. The corrosion products consist of non-stoichiometric apatite and garnet, formed through dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism. The growth rate of apatite layer increases rapidly with prolonged corrosion time, resulting in rapid corrosion. Additionally, the measured thickness of apatite layer is much lower than the predicted value based on the optical basicity theory.

High-temperature corrosion of spark plasma sintered Gd2SiO5 with volcanic ash for environmental barrier coatings

Seung-Hyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The hot corrosion behavior of gadolinium monosilicate (Gd2SiO5) with volcanic ash for environmental barrier coatings was evaluated. Sintered Gd2SiO5 was prepared through spark plasma sintering (SPS) method and evaluated for high-temperature corrosion resistance against volcanic ash. Chemical reactions were observed, causing partial dissolution of sintered Gd2SiO5 and formation of new crystal structure with increasing heat treatment time. High-temperature X-ray diffraction revealed corrosion reaction between Gd2SiO5 phase and the Ca component of volcanic ash, generating a new phase at 1300 degrees C.

Development of oxide-based High temperature environmental barrier coatings for ceramic matrix composites via the slurry process

Kang N. Lee et al.

Summary: An advanced environmental barrier coating (EBC) for SiC based composites was developed using a slurry process, with Yb2Si2O7 and mullite chosen as base materials for the bond coat. Various sintering aids enabled sintering at high temperatures, and the coatings showed good oxidation resistance and stability in steam oxidation tests. Additionally, kinetic analysis revealed that oxidant permeation through the silica scale is the rate controlling factor for TGO growth rates.

Crystallization behavior of air-plasma-sprayed ytterbium-silicate-based environmental barrier coatings

Summary: A combination of characterization techniques was used to provide new understanding of the complex crystallization behavior of as-sprayed amorphous Yb2Si2O7-based EBCs. Different phases formed and transformed during crystallization, with an increase in porosity contributing to anomalous expansion. Guidelines for achieving phase-pure and dense EBCs free of vertical cracks are also provided based on this understanding.

Corrosion behavior of calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) on sintered Gd2SiO5 for environmental barrier coatings

Seung-Hyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that Gd2SiO5 exhibits high-temperature corrosion behavior on CMAS, forming the Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 phase. With the increase of heat treatment time, the Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 particles in the reaction area show a thicker morphology.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the resistance of environmental barrier coating (EBC) to calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) phase at different temperatures, as well as the erosion effect of CMAS phase on EBC. The combination of SEM and EDS provided guidance for the modification of EBC.
