Dielectric and mechanical properties of hypersonic radome materials and metamaterial design: A review

Taylor Kenion et al.

Summary: This review paper examines ten current ceramic radome materials under research and development and provides a comprehensive overview of available high temperature and high frequency data from literature. An examination of metamaterials for radio-frequency transparent radomes is given and our preliminary experimental results of a high-temperature metamaterial design are presented. The next-generation hypersonic vehicles' radome temperatures will exceed 1000 degrees C and speeds will exceed Mach 5. An ideal radome material will have a high flexural strength, low dielectric constant and loss tangent, and high resistance to thermal shock and corrosion. The microstructural effect on the dielectric and mechanical properties and the effects of environmental factors such as rain are discussed. The impact of metamaterial structure on key radome factors such as boresight error, gain, and polarization is examined. After examining the associated benefits with the use of metamaterials, our preliminary results for a potential high-temperature metamaterial design are presented.

Fabrication and properties of Si2N2O-Si3N4 ceramics via direct ink writing and low-temperature sintering

Qiao Jiang et al.

Summary: Direct ink writing (DIW) and low-temperature sintering were used to prepare Si2N2O-Si3N4 ceramics, with HPMC addition and silica fume proportion optimized for stable and pseudoplastic slurry. By controlling temperature and additives, high-quality Si2N2O-Si3N4 ceramics with good dielectric properties can be obtained.

A comparative study on dielectric and mechanical properties of porous β-Si3N4 ceramics by controlling porosity and microstructure

Haoqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the designed microstructures have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of porous Si3N4 ceramics, but a less obvious effect on the dielectric properties. The dielectric constant can be reliably designed based on the porosity, and the mechanical properties can be optimized through microstructure.

High-strength and wave-transmitting Si3N4-Si2N2O-BN composites prepared using selective laser sintering

Kejie Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed high-strength and wave-transmission silicon nitride composites using selective laser sintering (SLS) and cold isostatic pressing (CIP). The effects of CIP pressure on densification, mechanical properties, and wave-transmitting properties of the Si3N4 ceramics were investigated. Adjusting CIP pressure improved densification and mechanical properties but decreased wave-transmitting performance.

High temperature ceramic radomes (HTCR)-A review

Abanti Nag et al.

Summary: Radome, an enclosure for radar antenna in military aircraft and missiles, is classified based on function type and operation speed. While composite laminates are suitable for subsonic applications, ceramics are the only option for high-speed military aerospace applications. Silicon nitride based radome materials with controlled porosity are proposed as futuristic high temperature materials for supersonic applications.

Heat Treatment Effect on the Phase Composition of the Silica Electrochemical Coating and the Carbon Fiber Strength

Sergei Galyshev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the chemical and phase composition of a carbon fiber coating obtained by the electrochemical sol-gel method. The experimental data from various methods show the coating consists of amorphous silicon oxide and crystalline potassium carbonate, with optimal heat treatment temperature at around 870 degrees C. The study also estimates the loss of fiber strength during the coating process.
