Reversible C-C Bond Cleavage of a Cobalt Diketimide into an Elusive Cobalt Aryl Nitrenoid Complex

Yunjung Baek et al.

Summary: The reactivity of (L-Tr)Co towards various aryl azides was investigated to understand the electronic structure and reactivity of dipyrrinato cobalt aryl nitrenoid complexes. The synthesis of a Co-II diketimide complex and its reversible C-C bond cleavage to yield a monomeric Co nitrenoid complex was demonstrated. The study revealed the pre-equilibrium between [(L-Tr)Co(NC6F5)](2) and (L-Tr)Co(NC6F5), as well as the reductive coupling, fluoride expulsion, and N-group transfer reactivity of (L-Tr)Co(NC6F5).

Reversible C-C Bond Formation, Halide Abstraction, and Electromers in Complexes of Iron Containing Redox-Noninnocent Pyridine-imine Ligands

Devika Pokhriyal et al.

Summary: The exploration of pyridine-imine (PI) iron complexes that exhibit redox noninnocence led to several interesting discoveries, including the disproportionation products during reduction and the crystal structure analysis. The use of polydentate diazepane-PI (DHPI) ligands in the synthesis of various compounds was also explored, showing potential applications in materials science. Further investigations into the polymerization reactions of these compounds revealed simple radical-initiated processes with little molecular weight control.

Visible-Light-Enhanced Cobalt-Catalyzed Hydrogenation: Switchable Catalysis Enabled by Divergence between Thermal and Photochemical Pathways

Lauren N. Mendelsohn et al.

Summary: The catalytic hydrogenation activity of a coordinatively saturated cobalt(I) precatalyst is described, showing improved performance under blue light irradiation. Under thermal conditions, a hydrogen atom transfer pathway is enabled by a weak cobalt-hydrogen bond, while under photocatalytic conditions, a coordination-insertion sequence is supported after light-induced dissociation of a carbonyl ligand. This study demonstrates the versatility of catalysis with Earth-abundant metals by switching between open- and closed-shell intermediates based on the energy source.

Catalytic Hydrogenation of Azobenzene in the Presence of a Cuboidal Mo3S4 Cluster via an Uncommon Sulfur-Based H2 Activation Mechanism

Eva Guillamon et al.

Summary: Catalyzed by a Mo-3(mu(3)-S)(mu-S)(3) diamino complex, azobenzene hydrogenation occurs under moderate conditions through a cluster catalysis mechanism. Dihydrogen activation takes place at the mu-S bridging atoms without direct participation of the metals, leading to the formation of an intermediate with similar appearance and disappearance rate constants. The experimental results support the proposed mechanism, demonstrating the potential of molybdenum sulfide materials as catalysts in hydrogenation processes.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Using an Air-Stable Base-Metal Catalyst

Viktoriia Zubar et al.

Summary: A method using a single base-metal catalyst to reduce nitroarenes and azobenzenes under relatively mild conditions has been successfully achieved. This method tolerates a wide range of functional groups and provides high yields of the desired products. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds through bifunctional activation involving metal-ligand cooperative catalysis.

Highly Selective Hydrogenation of C=C Bonds Catalyzed by a Rhodium Hydride

Yiting Gu et al.

Summary: Under mild conditions, Cp*Rh(2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl)H catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of the C=C bond in alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and many isolated double bonds. Mechanistic studies show that no radical intermediates are involved, and the catalyst is homogeneous, providing complementarity to existing protocols for similar hydrogenation processes.

Visible light enables catalytic formation of weak chemical bonds with molecular hydrogen

Yoonsu Park et al.

Summary: This study describes the direct photocatalytic synthesis of extremely weak element-hydrogen bonds of metal amido and metal imido complexes, as well as organic compounds with bond dissociation free energies as low as 31 kcal mol(-1). The key to this approach is the bifunctional behavior of the chromophoric iridium hydride photocatalyst, which enables the formation of weak chemical bonds near thermodynamic potential with no by-products. Photophysical and mechanistic studies corroborate radical-based reaction pathways and highlight the uniqueness of this photodriven approach in promoting new catalytic chemistry.
