Summary: In 2021, The MOE Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Synthesis and Functionalization in Zhejiang University achieved important results in the synthesis of organoboron catalysts, the production of high molecular weight polyesters, the fabrication of films and coatings, the synthesis of poly(propylene carbonate) and semicrystalline polyester, the development of linear non-conjugated polyesters, the development of supramolecular prodrug nano-assembly strategy, the synthesis of supramolecular hydrogels, the achievement of reversible fusion and fission of wet-spun graphene oxide fibers, the synthesis of non-conjugated polypeptides, the synthesis of conducting covalent organic frameworks, and the exploration of non-fused electron acceptors for polymer solar cells. The gel-grown long-range ordering bulk-heterojunctions also achieved improved X-ray detector performance.

Chirality-Directed Regioselectivity: An Approach for the Synthesis of Alternating Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid)

An enantiopure aluminum salen catalyst with binaphthyl backbone facilitated exclusive ring-opening at the glycolide acyl-oxygen bond site, resulting in low dispersities and tailored molecular weights. Quantitative regioselectivity calculations and sequence error analysis were established for this sequence-controlled polymer.

Cyclic Ether Triggers for Polymeric Frustrated Lewis Pair Gels

Summary: Sterically hindered Lewis acid and base centers form frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) instead of Lewis adducts, allowing for activation of small molecules. By applying FLP chemistry to polymeric frameworks, responsive and functional materials can be created. A versatile synthesis strategy for macromolecular FLPs has been developed, with potential demonstrated through ring-opening reactions of cyclic ethers in polymer networks. The steric and electronic properties of the ethers can tune the cross-linking, strength, and reactivity of the networks, showcasing the versatility of FLPs in simultaneously controlling small-molecule capture and mechanical properties of materials.

Surfactant-Emulating Amphiphilic Polycarbonates and Other Functional Polycarbonates through Metal-Free Copolymerization of CO2 with Ethylene Oxide

Summary: Three types of copolymers with different carbonate content were prepared through copolymerization of ethylene oxide with CO2 under metal-free conditions using onium salts as initiators. The copolymerization process also allowed for the introduction of functional groups along the backbone of the copolymers and the generation of amphiphilic triblocks with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance. The properties of the copolymers were characterized by various analytical methods and their degradation behavior was investigated under different conditions.
