Self-Assembly Synthesis of a [2]Catenane CoII Single-Molecule Magnet

Benjamin H. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study describes the self-assembly synthesis of an octanuclear Co-II [2]catenane with unique magnetic properties. By manipulating the synthetic conditions, a mixed-valence non-catenated rectangle can also be obtained. The work demonstrates the precise control of single-molecule magnets in complex arrangements through metallo-supramolecular chemistry.

Synthesis and Electrochemistry of Free-Base Porphyrins Bearing Trifluoromethyl meso-Substituents

Shaymaa Al Shehimy et al.

Summary: CF3-substituted porphyrins have attracted increasing interest. This study reports the synthesis of a series of free base porphyrins incorporating one, two, and three CF3 substituents, including a never-before-described 5,10,15-tris(CF3) substituted porphyrin. Detailed electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses were carried out to assess the electron-withdrawing properties of CF3 substituents compared to C6F5. The study proposes an interpretation of the unusual electrochemical signature of these molecules featuring three successive one-electron reduction waves.

Chemically and Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching (CISSS) of a nonheme-iron complex

Kim Fischer et al.

Summary: This article investigates two complexes, one shows Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching (CISSS) effect upon the addition of pyridine, and the other exhibits Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching (LD-CISSS) effect upon photoirradiation. Concentration-dependent NMR measurements provide further support for this interpretation.

Dynamics of Spin Crossover Molecular Complexes

Thilini K. Ekanayaka et al.

Summary: The understanding of the time scale and mechanisms associated with spin state changes in transition metal-based spin crossover (SCO) molecular complexes is reviewed. Most time resolved experiments are carried out using optical techniques, revealing the complex interplay of factors influencing the optically driven spin state transition. Size reduction to the nanoscale is essential for designing SCO systems with fast switching capabilities, making nano-sized SCO systems key for device applications where write speed is crucial.

Towards Photoswitchable Contrast Agents for Absolute 3D Temperature MR Imaging

Vanessa Wellm et al.

Summary: Temperature can be used as a clinical marker for tissue metabolism, inflammations, or tumors, with the use of MRI for noninvasive monitoring of physiological parameters. The study demonstrates the use of MRI contrast agents for absolute and concentration independent temperature imaging, based on Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching. Different temperature responsive contrast agents were successfully tested as prototypes in methanol-based gels, creating temperature maps with high spatial resolution and low temperature errors.

A Fluorescence-Detected Coordination-Induced Spin State Switch

Hannah Kurz et al.

Summary: The study presents a family of planar nickel(II) complexes with sensitive CISSS tracked by fluorescence detection. These complexes fluoresce in noncoordinating solvents but are fluorescence-silent in the presence of axial ligands. FD-CISSS shows higher sensitivity compared to absorption-based CISSS.

Incorporation of spin-crossover cobalt(II) complexes into conducting metallopolymers: Towards redox-controlled spin change

Minh T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Metal complexes and conducting metallopolymers with spin change controlled by redox chemistry have been synthesized, showing the potential for switching between paramagnetic and diamagnetic states. The complexes exhibit gradual thermal spin crossover at specific temperatures, supporting the viability of the spin change. Through electrochemical studies, reversible interconversion between Co(II) and Co(III) metal centers in the conducting metallopolymers has been demonstrated, allowing for the switch between paramagnetic and diamagnetic properties.

Summary: The interactions between conjugated organic p-radicals offer unique properties that are useful in various fields of chemistry and materials science, such as supramolecular assembly and stimuli-controlled molecular switches. By controlling the formation of radical cationic or anionic species, these interactions can provide flexible triggers for directed assembly and controlled molecular motions.
