Photosensitized [2+2]-Cycloadditions of Alkenylboronates and Alkenes

Yanyao Liu et al.

Summary: A new strategy for the synthesis of highly versatile cyclobutylboronates via photosensitized [2+2]-cycloaddition is presented. The process exhibits a unique mechanism where energy transfer occurs with alkenylboronates. This strategy allows for the synthesis of diverse cyclobutylboronates and demonstrates their utility in the synthesis of melicodenine C.

Olefin-Supported Cationic Copper Catalysts for Photochemical Synthesis of Structurally Complex Cyclobutanes

Christopher S. Gravatt et al.

Summary: The sole method available for the photocycloaddition of unconjugated aliphatic alkenes is the Cu-catalyzed Salomon-Kochi reaction. A new catalyst system with superior reactivity and photostability has been designed, offering significantly expanded substrate scope and highlighted through the preparation of the natural products sulcatine G and perforatol.

Direct Deamination of Primary Amines via Isodiazene Intermediates

Kathleen J. Berger et al.

Summary: The study reports a reaction that selectively deaminates primary amines and anilines under mild conditions with remarkable functional group tolerance, including pharmaceutical compounds, amino acids, amino sugars, and natural products. An anomeric amide reagent facilitates the reaction through the intermediacy of an unprecedented monosubstituted isodiazene intermediate, simplifying deamination and enabling strategic applications of iminium and amine-directed chemistries as traceless methods. Mechanistic and computational studies support the intermedicacy of a primary isodiazene, which exhibits unexpected divergence from previously studied secondary isodiazenes, leading to cage-escaping, free radical species undergoing a chain hydrogen-atom transfer process with aliphatic and diazenyl radical intermediates.

Mechanisms of the Cu(I)-Catalyzed Intermolecular Photocycloaddition Reaction Revealed by Optical and X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopies

Gethmini K. Jayasekara et al.

Summary: The mechanism of Cu(I)-catalyzed intermolecular photocycloaddition reaction using norbornene and cyclohexene as model substrates was elucidated using a combination of optical and X-ray transient absorption spectroscopies. The study revealed distinct reaction pathways for the two substrates, shedding light on the role of metal-to-ligand charge transfer and product formation in the reactions.
