Success in pediatric surgery: An updated survey of Program Directors 2020

Summary: This study surveyed program directors of Pediatric Surgery programs in the US and Canada to evaluate the factors considered in selecting and ranking applicants. The results showed that important factors included the quality of letters of recommendation, quantity and quality of publications, interview performance, teamwork skills, operative skills, patient care, and leadership abilities.

Characteristics of Matriculants to Thoracic Surgery Residency Training Programs

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of applicants to thoracic surgery residency programs and identified factors associated with successful matriculation. Factors such as education at United States allopathic schools, membership in the American Osteopathic Association, general surgery residency affiliation with a thoracic surgery program or National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and being a first-time applicant were independently associated with matriculation. Matriculants published a higher number of manuscripts and more frequently published in higher impact journals compared to non-matriculants.

Evaluation of Factors Associated With Successful Matriculation to Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship

Summary: Successful matriculation to a colon and rectal surgery fellowship program was associated with US citizenship, graduation from a US allopathic medical school, and a greater number of program applications, while other objective metrics analyzed were not associated with successful matriculation. Subjective and objective factors that were unable to be measured by this study are likely to play a determining role.
