Comprehensive review on twin support vector machines

M. Tanveer et al.

Summary: TWSVM and TSVR are emerging machine learning techniques for classification and regression challenges. TWSVM classifies data points using two nonparallel hyperplanes, while TSVR is based on TWSVM and solves two SVM-type problems. Although there has been progress in research on these techniques, there is limited literature on the comparison of different variants of TSVR.

Thermal Analysis Infrastructure in OpenSees for Fire and its Smart Application Interface Towards Natural Fire Modelling

Liming Jiang et al.

Summary: Understanding fire behavior in buildings is crucial for structural fire safety design practice. The paper introduces a new modeling infrastructure in OpenSees to estimate thermal response of structural members to various fires, and provides an interface to capture natural fire models. Validation against fire tests and incorporating more fire dynamics research is suggested for future improvement.

Smart performance-based design for building fire safety: Prediction of smoke motion via AI

Ling-chu Su et al.

Summary: This study introduced a smart framework for fire-engineering Performance-Based Design (PBD) using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict smoke motion and Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) in atrium fires. By training a CFD database with AI, the model can accurately predict smoke visibility profiles and ASET in a much shorter time compared to conventional methods, demonstrating the feasibility of using AI in fire safety design to reduce time and cost.

Performance investigation of fire protection and intervention strategies: Artificial neural network-based assessment framework

Rachid Ouache et al.

Summary: This study developed an integrated framework to investigate and assess fire safety strategies, using a case study of British Columbia. The results showed that a majority of fires were visually detected, with some smoke alarms not being activated. Different fire suppression systems had varying success rates. The findings are statistically significant and a proposed ANN model predicted fire impacts with high accuracy, aiding decision-makers in enhancing and investing in specific fire safety strategies.

An engineer's guide to eXplainable Artificial Intelligence and Interpretable Machine Learning: Navigating causality, forced goodness, and the false perception of inference

M. Z. Naser

Summary: The resistance towards adopting AI/ML in structural engineering stems from the lack of transparency in these technologies and the contrast with traditional methods favored by the industry and education. While engineers tend to chase good metrics when adopting AI/ML, forced goodness may lead to false inference.
