Reading the climate signals hidden in bauxite

Beatrix M. Heller et al.

Summary: The dynamics of tropical weathering through time and its association with climatic and geodynamic forcing in the formation of laterite and its long-term evolution are studied. The study focuses on lateritic-bauxitic duricrusts from Kaw mountain in French Guiana and investigates their mineralogy, geochemistry, and (U-Th)/He geochronology. The results reveal the heterogeneity in the formation and evolution of duricrust through processes of dissolution and (re)precipitation of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. The intensification of weathering and shift towards bauxitic conditions since the end of the Miocene are indicated by the dissolution and (re)precipitation of Fe minerals, Al-substitution in goethite, and the overall enrichment in Th. The study proposes a model of lateritization since at least 30 Ma and bauxitization since the late Miocene, providing new insights into the timescale and intensity of weathering in the region.

Summary: The Sao Francisco Craton and its marginal Aracuai and Brasilia orogens exhibit significant diversity in their lithospheric architecture and underwent different geological processes. New apatite fission track data indicate varying lithospheric strengths and crustal exhumation histories in different regions.

Regolith LANDSAT-8/OLI and Hyperion/EO-1 images classification in midwest of Brazil

Marcus Vinicius Souza et al.

Summary: The study combined orbital satellite images with fieldwork and analysis to develop a mathematical model for mapping tropical regolith in the Midwest of Brazil. The model was validated using hyperspectral imagery and identified specific mineral occurrences within the regolith layers. This classification model provides precise geological information for mineral exploration and understanding surface geochemical anomalies in deeply weathered regions.

Boolean and fuzzy logic operators and multivariate linear regression applied to airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data for regolith mapping in granite-greenstone terrain in Midwest Brazil

Summary: Recent studies have proposed the use of predictive algorithms maps generated by combining K, Th and U airborne gamma-ray spectrometry channels. Two modeling techniques using airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data in GIS software have been shown to be effective in mapping regolith, improving geomorphology interpretation, and identifying mineral exploration target sites.
