Frequency-Domain Hot-Wire Measurements of Molten Nitrate Salt Thermal Conductivity

Andrew Z. Zhao et al.

Summary: Traditional methods for determining the thermal conductivity of liquids using steady-state temperature gradient or time-dependent temperature rise face challenges in high-temperature environments. A new corrosion-resistant, short hot-wire technique operating in the frequency domain provides a reliable way to measure the thermal conductivity of molten salts, offering increased accuracy and precision in a small sample volume.

Analysis of thermocline thermal energy storage systems with generic initial condition algebraic model

Aristides M. Bonanos et al.

Summary: A new algebraic solution for thermocline thermal energy storage tanks was developed in this work and successfully validated. The algebraic solution is more computationally efficient compared to other one-dimensional models, providing better predictions for the operation of thermocline tanks. The study also showed that the efficiency of thermocline tanks decreases initially and eventually reaches a steady state during multiple consecutive charging and discharging cycles.

Molten Salts for Sensible Thermal Energy Storage: A Review and an Energy Performance Analysis

Adrian Caraballo et al.

Summary: A comprehensive review was conducted on different thermal energy storage materials for concentrated solar power, with nitrate-based materials found to be best for low temperatures and chloride-based materials best for high temperatures. This is mainly due to their low cost compared to fluoride and carbonate-based candidates.

High-Temperature Chloride-Carbonate Phase Change Material: Thermal Performances and Modelling of a Packed Bed Storage System for Concentrating Solar Power Plants

Giovanni Salvatore Sau et al.

Summary: Molten salts eutectics are considered promising phase change materials for thermal storage applications due to their ability to store and release heat at high temperatures. This study focused on investigating the thermophysical behavior of a cost-effective and safe ternary eutectic for thermal storage, using an indirect heat exchanger with aluminum capsules and air as the heat transfer fluid. The simulation showed a realistic storage efficiency of around 0.6 and estimated a conservative investment cost for the storage system.

Performance of an Indirect Packed Bed Reactor for Chemical Energy Storage

Tiziano Delise et al.

Summary: Chemical systems for thermal energy storage show promise in addressing solar irradiation fluctuation issues, and this study focused on simulating a configuration using an indirect-packed bed heat exchanger. Despite limitations in heat exchange efficiency, the results demonstrated a good storage efficiency of about 0.7.
