Effect of excitation wavelength (blue vs near UV) and dopant concentrations on afterglow and fast decay of persistent phosphor SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+

Bernhard Walfort et al.

Summary: The persistent phosphor SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ has been studied extensively, but the presence of two different Sr2+ sites occupied by Eu2+ ions in this phosphor is often overlooked. In this study, we propose a general scheme of energy transfers in these materials and experimentally investigate the effect of excitation wavelength on the afterglow and emission decay curves of differently doped SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ samples. The results indicate that Dy3+ ions are involved in the trapping process, while excited Eu2+ ions can potentially transfer their energy to trap states. Understanding the contributions of different active ions on lattice sites is crucial for comprehending the afterglow processes.
