Post-transient examination of performance of uranium silicide fuel and silicon-carbide composite cladding under reactivity-initiated accident conditions

Jason Schulthess et al.

Summary: New fuel systems are being developed to improve accident tolerance, fuel utilization, and economics of nuclear reactors. Experimental tests under transient irradiation conditions show that accident tolerant materials maintain their geometry but may develop cracks in the cladding due to fuel pellet-induced displacement.

Evaluation of gamma-ray transmission through rectangular collimator slits for application in nuclear fuel spectrometry

Lorenzo Senis et al.

Summary: Gamma-ray spectrometry plays a crucial role in various scientific fields, especially in the non-destructive examination of irradiated nuclear fuel. This study examined the intensity of gamma-ray transmitted through a rectangular collimator slit and proposed parametric models for prediction. Both analytical and numerical methods showed satisfactory accuracy in predicting the gamma-ray transport through the collimator.

The XTRA Option at the NEUTRA Facility-More Than 10 Years of Bi-Modal Neutron and X-ray Imaging at PSI

Eberhard H. Lehmann et al.

Summary: The concept of combining neutron and X-ray imaging was introduced by extending the NEUTRA instrument with a complementary X-ray tube setup at the start of the new millennium. Utilizing the same detector configuration for both imaging modalities allows for a correlation and combination of attenuation data at pixel-wise and voxel-wise levels, depending on the specific research question. Several examples of bimodal neutron and X-ray imaging at PSI over a decade will be reviewed.

Transient testing of uranium silicide fuel in zircaloy and silicon carbide cladding

David Kamerman et al.

Summary: Fresh U3Si2 fuel pellets were tested under reactivity-initiated accident conditions at the newly restarted TREAT facility, showing that they can retain rod-like geometry under certain energy depositions. In-pile thermocouples and infrared pyrometers were used to measure cladding temperature, with results in agreement with predictions. Further testing in more prototypic environments is still needed.
