Supersensitivity of Patients With Bipolar I Disorder to Light-Induced Phase Delay by Narrow Bandwidth Blue Light

Philipp Ritter et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with bipolar I disorder are more prone to experiencing phase delays following exposure to blue light in the evening compared to healthy control subjects. The enhanced phase delay in bipolar disorder patients may contribute to their observed phase instability and vulnerability to forced phase shifts.

Diversity of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells: circuits and functions

Marcos L. Aranda et al.

Summary: The discovery of ipRGCs has shed light on their diverse roles in various visual functions and behaviors, such as regulating circadian rhythms, driving pupillary light reflex, and modulating mood and alertness. The presence of melanopsin as a unique molecular signature has enabled the development of molecular and genetic tools for studying ipRGC circuits.

Individual differences in light sensitivity affect sleep and circadian rhythms

Sarah L. Chellappa

Summary: Individual differences in sensitivity to light have significant implications for the effects on sleep and circadian rhythms, yet these differences are often overlooked in real-life settings. Studies based on human laboratory and field research have identified links between individual traits such as age, sex, chronotype, genetic haplotypes, and the impact of evening/night light exposure on sleep and circadian rhythms. This highlights the importance of considering personalized lighting solutions to promote quality of life and health.

Clinical correlates of seasonality in bipolar disorder: A specifier that needs specification?

Giovanna Fico et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive association of Seasonal Pattern with BDII, family history of mood disorder, and fewer aggressiveness-related symptoms. Seasonality in bipolar disorder shows a biphasic pattern with similar dominance of (hypo)mania and depression, more common in BDII compared to BDI.

Circadian depression: A mood disorder phenotype

Joanne S. Carpenter et al.

Summary: Major mood syndromes are common and disabling mental disorders, with a lack of clear delineation of underlying pathophysiological mechanisms hindering prevention and treatment. Dysfunction of the 24-h circadian system is a potential mechanism linked to mood syndromes. 'Circadian depression' is proposed as a new clinical phenotype with disrupted 24-h sleep-wake cycles, reduced motor activity, low subjective energy, and weight gain as key characteristics. Early onset, bipolarity features, poor response to traditional antidepressants, and concurrent cardiometabolic and inflammatory issues are part of the illness course associated with this phenotype. Identifying and targeting circadian disturbances in mood syndromes may offer valuable clinical insights for effective treatment strategies.

Diagnostic conversion to bipolar disorder in unipolar depressed patients in Hong Kong: A 20-year follow-up study

Ansen C. Tse et al.

Summary: A retrospective longitudinal study conducted in Hong Kong revealed a conversion rate of 19.5% from unipolar depression to bipolar disorder with associated risk factors such as family history of mental illness, young age at onset, and psychotic symptoms. Patients who did not convert to bipolar disorder had a higher suicide rate compared to those who converted. Vigilance is crucial in the first decade after onset when most conversions occur.

Insulin Resistance and Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction Underlie Neuroprogression in Bipolar Disorder

Cynthia Calkin et al.

Summary: Bipolar disorder often progresses to a chronic and treatment-resistant state. Insulin resistance is common in patients with bipolar disorder and may contribute to its progression. Reversing insulin resistance or optimizing blood-brain barrier function could offer novel strategies for prevention or treatment of neuroprogressive bipolar disorder.

Variations in seasonal solar insolation are associated with a history of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder

Michael Bauer et al.

Summary: This study confirms an inverse association between a history of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder and the ratio of mean winter insolation to mean summer insolation. Other factors associated with increased risk of suicide attempts include a history of alcohol or substance abuse, female gender, and younger birth cohort.

Fundamentals of circadian entrainment by light

R. G. Foster

Summary: Light at dawn and dusk plays a crucial role in entraining the circadian clock, with dusk light delaying the clock and dawn light advancing it. Human entrainment requires relatively bright light for a longer duration, but the exact relationship between light intensity and duration is still not fully understood.
