Suicidal motivations among opioid overdose survivors: Replication and extension

Hilary S. Connery et al.

Summary: Desire to die is common among individuals with opioid use disorder before nonfatal opioid overdose, with approximately 1 in 5 people with a history of overdose reporting intention to die prior to their most recent overdose. This population also tends to underestimate the risk of overdose. Careful assessment of suicidal cognition may help improve prevention of opioid overdose deaths.

Opioid harm reduction: A scoping review of physician and system-level gaps in knowledge, education, and practice

Emma Gugala et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify and describe gaps in physicians' knowledge, education, and practice in harm reduction strategies related to opioid overdose. The results showed that the studies primarily focused on physicians' perceptions, clinical knowledge gaps, and access issues at the system level. Resolving these gaps requires strengthening physicians' continuing education and implementing interprofessional education, as well as increasing patient access to care, developing policies favorable to harm reduction, and providing resources for harm reduction strategies.

Summary: The study examined barriers and facilitators of policy-prescribed service provision for opioid overdose patients in Rhode Island EDs, highlighting the importance of automatic service delivery and integration of peer-based services. Summary: The study reported trends in suicide and self-injury mortality (SIM) deaths in the United States from 1999 to 2018, depicting variations among states and focusing on the diffusion of drug self-intoxication in SIM. The national SIM rate is increasing, while the suicide rate is rising at a slower pace. Geographic disparities may be related to local differences in drug availability and quality of death investigations.
