Connectome gradient dysfunction in major depression and its association with gene expression profiles and treatment outcomes

Mingrui Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated alterations in the connectome gradient structure in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and its association with gene expression profiles and treatment outcomes. The results showed global and focal changes in the principal primary-to-transmodal gradient in MDD patients, which were significantly correlated with meta-analytic terms related to sensory processing and higher-order cognition. Furthermore, the transcriptional profiles and baseline gradient maps of patients predicted symptomatic improvement after treatment.

Abnormal large-scale resting-state functional networks in drug-free major depressive disorder

Summary: The study reveals dysregulated brain functional networks in patients with depression, especially in networks related to self-referential activities and emotional visual processing. This dysregulation is associated with the severity of depression symptoms.

Combining machine learning algorithms for prediction of antidepressant treatment response

Alexander Kautzky et al.

Summary: Predictors for treatment outcomes in major depressive disorder are still lacking, a study on acutely depressed patients identified the importance of treatment- and symptom-specific algorithms in increasing accuracies in predicting treatment success. Machine learning plays a decisive role in antidepressant treatment management.

Social exclusion reliably engages the default network: A meta-analysis of Cyberball

Summary: Social exclusion refers to the experience of being disregarded or rejected by others, with negative consequences for well-being and cognition. The neural correlates of social exclusion remain a topic of debate, particularly regarding the role of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC).

Propagating patterns of intrinsic activity along macroscale gradients coordinate functional connections across the whole brain

Behnaz Yousefi et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the human brain exhibits macroscale spatial organization in functional networks and gradients through coordinated activity with distinct spatial and temporal characteristics. Understanding these patterns might provide insight into aspects of the brain's intrinsic activity and play a significant role in coordinating functional connections across the whole brain.

Systematically disrupted functional gradient of the cortical connectome in generalized epilepsy: Initial discovery and independent sample replication

Yao Meng et al.

Summary: Using connectome gradients, this study systematically investigated abnormalities in functional connectome gradients in patients with genetic generalized epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizures, and found an extended principal gradient at different spatial scales associated with duration of epilepsy and age at seizure onset. Consistent results were found across processing parameters and in a validation sample, revealing disrupted functional hierarchy and excessive functional segregation in patients with epilepsy.

Differences in subcortico-cortical interactions identified from connectome and microcircuit models in autism

Bo-yong Park et al.

Summary: The study suggests that there are significant differences in structural connectome organization in individuals with autism compared to typically developing controls, particularly in low-level somatosensory regions and high-level association cortices. Computational models reveal that macroscale anomalies are related to atypical increases in recurrent excitation/inhibition and subcortical inputs into cortical microcircuits in sensory and motor areas.

Shifting gradients of macroscale cortical organization mark the transition from childhood to adolescence

Hao-Ming Dong et al.

Summary: The transition from childhood to adolescence is marked by significant changes in brain structure and function, especially in the gradient patterns across the cortex. The maturation process of these gradient patterns is not uniformly distributed and becomes more refined with age.
