Lithium-Metal Anode Instability of the Superionic Halide Solid Electrolytes and the Implications for Solid-State Batteries

Luise M. Riegger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of a reaction layer and stability issues between halide-based solid electrolytes and lithium, aiming to find methods for long-term stable and low impedance operation. The results show that halide-based lithium superionic conductors react with lithium metal, leading to unstable interfaces and increased resistance.

Tunable Lithium-Ion Transport in Mixed-Halide Argyrodites Li6-xPS5-xClBrx: An Unusual Compositional Space

Sawankumar Patel et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new compositional space of argyrodite superionic conductors, Li6-xPS5-xClBrx [0 <= x <= 0.8], with high ionic conductivity and low lithium migration barrier. Bromination treatment can maintain the parent Li6PS5Cl structure within a certain range, leading to enhanced Li+ ion dynamics and a liquid-like Li sublattice. Halogen-rich compositions induce hypercoordination and coordination entropy, enhancing Li+ ion transport in the material.

Effect of defects and defect distribution on Li-diffusion and elastic properties of anti-perovskite Li3OCl solid electrolyte

Ardeshir Baktash et al.

Summary: The type and distribution of defects in Li3OCl significantly affect the diffusion coefficient, with the highest conductivity achieved in a sample with a regular distribution of LiCl Schottky defects. Introducing these defects only causes minor changes in the elastic properties of Li3OCl solid electrolytes, benefiting the design of high-performance all-solid-state Li-ion batteries.

Borohydride Substitution Effects of Li6PS5Cl Solid Electrolyte

Heng Wang et al.

Summary: An electrochemically stable borohydride-substituted Liargyrodite solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity was prepared by a mechanical ball-milling method, showing virtually no change in crystal structure at lower substitution levels. The electrochemical window of the substituted solid electrolyte was between 1 and 4 V against lithium metal.

Molecular-Level Insight into the Interfacial Reactivity and Ionic Conductivity of a Li-Argyrodite Li6PS5Cl Solid Electrolyte at Bare and Coated Li-Metal Anodes

Andrey Golov et al.

Summary: In this study, key interfacial properties of sulfide electrolyte Li-argyrodite Li6PS5Cl in contact with Li metal were investigated using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. The main reaction mechanisms of Li6PS5Cl reduction by Li metal were revealed, with Li2Sn5 predicted as the most suitable coating to partially prevent electrolyte degradation while maintaining a relatively low interfacial resistance. These findings shed light on the interface chemistry of sulfide-based electrolytes in contact with Li metal, providing insights for further computational and experimental studies in the field.
