Recent progress in dehydrogenation catalysts for heterocyclic and homocyclic liquid organic hydrogen carriers

Yeongin Jo et al.

Summary: Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are promising for H-2 storage and transportation, with the most stringent limitation being high temperatures required for the dehydrogenation reaction. Pd-based catalysts are preferred in the conversion of heterocyclic LOHC due to preferential adsorption of heteroatoms, while Pt-based catalysts dominate in the cleavage of C-H bonds for homocyclic LOHC. Efforts are needed to inhibit the generation of byproducts and improve overall performance and stability.

Benzyltoluene/perhydro benzyltoluene - pushing the performance limits of pure hydrocarbon liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems

Timo Ruede et al.

Summary: LOHC technologies enable safe and efficient hydrogen logistics using the existing fuel infrastructure. This study presents benzyltoluene (H0-BT)/perhydro benzyltoluene (H12-BT) as a highly attractive technical LOHC system. The H0-BT/H12-B system combines high volumetric storage density and excellent robustness with low viscosity for easy handling under colder operation conditions. Compared to other LOHC systems, the reaction rates for hydrogen uptake and release are generally higher in the H0-BT/H12-BT system.

Parallel and series multi-bed pressure swing adsorption processes for H2 recovery from a lean hydrogen mixture

Yongha Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated parallel and series pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes for H-2 recovery from lean hydrogen mixtures, achieving > 99% H-2 purity. The parallel two-bed PSA process showed H-2 purity of 94.6-98.3% and recovery of 33.5-63.2%, while the series PSA processes achieved over > 99% purity and recovery of 62.478% and 82.643% due to additional pressure equalization steps and blowdown gas utilization. The parallel four-bed PSA process had the highest H-2 productivity, while the series four-bed PSA process achieved > 99% purity with a lower productivity.

Remarkably fast low-temperature hydrogen storage into aromatic benzyltoluenes over MgO-supported Ru nanoparticles with homolytic and heterolytic H2 adsorption

Tae Wan Kim et al.

Summary: This study introduced a highly active Ru/MgO catalyst for hydrogenation of monobenzyltoluene and dibenzyltoluene at low temperatures, exhibiting faster storage rate and superior kinetic parameters compared to other supported Ru catalysts. The better catalytic performance is attributed to the strong adsorption capability of monobenzyltoluene and hydrogen by Ru/MgO, as well as the heterolytic H-2 dissociation near the Ru-MgO interface confirmed by DFT calculations.

Co-Mn catalysts for H2 production via methane pyrolysis in molten salts

Clemens F. Patzschke et al.

Summary: The study investigates the production of CO2-free H2 from natural gas through methane pyrolysis in molten salts, identifying mixed Co-Mn catalysts as highly promising. Increasing the molar Co:Mn ratio from zero to two can enhance CH4 conversion rates. Results show that Co-rich catalysts inhibit interactions between the support and the active phase, leading to stable performance and carbon-free surfaces.
