Modelling fatigue crack growth in shape memory alloys

Marlini Simoes et al.

Summary: We propose a phase field-based framework for modeling fatigue damage in Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs). The model combines a generalized phase field description of fracture, a constitutive model for SMAs, and a fatigue degradation function to accurately predict fatigue crack growth rates and material failure due to fatigue.

Cracking predictions of lithium-ion battery electrodes by X-ray computed tomography and modelling

Adam M. Boyce et al.

Summary: Fracture of lithium-ion battery electrodes can lead to capacity fade and reduced battery lifespan. Advanced imaging techniques, electro-chemo-mechanical models, and fracture frameworks have been combined to predict void-driven fracture in realistic battery electrode microstructures. The study reveals heterogeneous electrochemical and fracture responses in electrodes, influenced by particle size and distance from separator/current collector.

Multiphysics phase-field modeling of quasi-static cracking in urania ceramic nuclear fuel

Wei Li et al.

Summary: This work presents a phase-field modeling approach for quasi-static cracking in UO2 ceramic nuclear fuel under neutron radiation at high temperatures, considering tightly coupled multi-physics processes. It includes diffusion, thermal and fracture models, taking into account temperature and irradiation effects, and is applied to simulate fuel pellet cracking during reactor operation, startup, power ramp, and shutdown. The study highlights the importance of UO2 creep in fuel pellet fragmentation and its potential for guiding material design of ceramic nuclear fuels.

Phase field predictions of microscopic fracture and R-curve behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: The computational framework accurately captures the crack path, interface debonding, and load versus displacement response of fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Sensitivity analysis on the crack growth resistance curve to matrix fracture toughness and fiber-matrix interface properties, as well as the influence of porosity on the R-curve, provide insights into microscopic fracture mechanisms and pave the way for efficient design of high fracture toughness composites.

Phase field modelling of fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys

Marlini Simoes et al.

Summary: A new phase field framework is presented for modeling fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), showcasing its potential in capturing main fracture features associated with SMAs. The model demonstrates capabilities in handling crack tip fields and complex cracking phenomena, such as unstable crack growth and mixed-mode fracture. Additionally, the framework is extended to fatigue to capture crack nucleation and propagation in biomedical stents using nitinol SMAs.

Summary: In this study, a new theoretical and numerical framework for modelling mechanically-assisted corrosion in elastic-plastic solids is presented. The model successfully captures pitting and stress corrosion cracking, as well as the pit-to-crack transition. For the first time, the role of mechanical straining as the electrochemical driving force is incorporated. The use of a phase field paradigm helps in accurately approximating complex SCC morphologies.
