Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics over facile prepared bimetallic RuCoNx/NC

Mingxing Zhao et al.

Summary: The N-doped bimetallic RuCoNx/NC catalyst prepared by direct pyrolysis of chitin shows excellent hydrodeoxygenation performance due to the continuous spillover of H from Ru to Co and abundant accessible active sites. It can convert 4-propylguaiacol into 92% 4-propylcyclohexanol at 210 degrees C, with 95% selectivity towards propylcyclohexane at 280 degrees C after 6 hours. Reusability tests demonstrate that RuCoNx/NC can be recycled four times without loss of conversion and initial selectivity, indicating its general applicability for HDO of various phenolic compounds.

Mild hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils to hydrocarbons over bifunctional ZrP2O7-Ni12P5 catalysts

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: This study has developed a bifunctional ZrP2O7-Ni12P5 catalyst for efficiently converting lignin-derived bio-oils into hydrocarbons through HDO. The catalyst with the molar ratio of Zr/Ni at 0.4 shows the best catalytic performance, achieving high yields of cyclohexane from guaiacol and hydrocarbons from lignin-derived bio-oils under mild conditions.

Molybdenum oxide decorated Ru catalyst for enhancement of lignin oil hydrodeoxygenation to hydrocarbons

Wei Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, ruthenium and molybdenum oxide nanoparticles supported on activated carbon catalysts were synthesized and applied for the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin oil. The results showed that loading molybdenum precursor before ruthenium precursor enhanced the dispersion and acidity of the catalyst. The reduction temperature also played a role in determining the product distribution. The catalyst achieved high conversion and selectivity in the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin oil, and exhibited good stability and regenerability.

Insights into the catalytic performance of Ni/Nb2O5 catalysts for vanillin hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous phase: The role of Nb2O5 crystal structures

Zaiman Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous phase is a green and efficient approach for converting biomass and its derivatives into high value-added chemicals and renewable fuels. In this study, Ni/T-Nb2O5 catalyst with the highest concentration of oxygen vacancies (Ov) exhibited excellent hydrodeoxygenation performance. The synergistic effect between Ov and water promoted the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin in aqueous phase, achieving a high yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP).

Dehydrogenation mechanisms of liquid organic hydrogen carriers over Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ni surfaces: Cyclohexane as a model compound

Xinbao Li et al.

Summary: The dehydrogenation mechanisms of liquid organic hydrogen carriers were studied using density functional theory calculations on different metal surfaces, revealing linear relationships between adsorption energies and hydrogen removal. The rate-determining step of cyclohexane dehydrogenation to C6H5* was identified, with reactivity order of Rh(1 1 1) > Pt(1 1 1) > Pd(1 1 1) > Ni(1 1 1).

The U.S. Energy System and the Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel From Clean Electricity

Jonathan L. Male et al.

Summary: Jet fuel has relatively small energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, but airlines have ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Large amounts of sustainable aviation fuel will be needed to achieve these goals. While carbon dioxide and clean electricity may potentially provide the fuel in the future, an ethanol oligomerization option will require less energy.

Regulatory and Policy Analysis of Production, Development and Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in the United States

Ekrem Korkut et al.

Summary: The United States is expanding its law and policy to incentivize the use of sustainable aviation fuels, relying on voluntary programs at federal, state, and regional levels. This contrasts with the more cohesive policies adopted by the European Union and European countries, which are important for U.S. carriers to track due to the international nature of aviation.

Quantitative Policy Analysis for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Technologies

Z. Juju Wang et al.

Summary: This paper quantifies the impact of different policy options on the economic viability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production technologies, finding that all technology pathways studied are not financially viable without policy aid, and the median total policy costs required for economic viability range from 35 to 337 million USD per production facility, or 0.07-0.71 USD/liter. The cumulative impact of multiple policies could result in economically viable SAF production.
