Magnetism and the Trimeron Bond

J. Paul Attfield

Summary: Research on the Verwey transition in magnetite in recent years has shown that it involves not only electronic and structural transitions, but also phenomena such as Fe2+/Fe3+ charge ordering, Fe2+ orbital ordering, and trimeron formation. Additionally, new studies have revealed the effects of doping on the Verwey transition, as well as a new class of binary mixed-valent iron oxides discovered under high pressure conditions.

Ab Initio Computations of O and AO as well as ReO2, WO2 and BO2-Terminated ReO3, WO3, BaTiO3, SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 (001) Surfaces

Roberts Eglitis et al.

Summary: In this study, surface relaxation and rumpling computations were performed for ReO3, WO3, SrTiO3, BaTiO3, and BaZrO3 (001) surfaces using a hybrid B3LYP or B3PW exchange and correlation description. The results showed that the upper layer atoms on the surface shifted towards the bulk, the second layer atoms shifted upwards, and the third layer atoms shifted downwards. Additionally, the surface Gamma-Gamma bandgaps were found to be smaller than the bulk Gamma-Gamma bandgaps.

Hubbard-corrected oxide formation enthalpies without adjustable parameters

J. Voss

Summary: The study introduces a method to compute the heat of formation of transition metal oxides using DFT without adjustable parameters. Different degrees of d-electron localization are treated using the DFT+U approach, and a model based on a local d-electron density matrix is used to compare the relative stabilities of differently treated phases. This method, which does not rely on fitting parameters, eliminates the need for element-specific corrections in predicting reaction energies of transition metal oxides.

Ground-state structure, orbital ordering and metal-insulator transition in double-perovskite PrBaMn2O6

Sergey V. Streltsov et al.

Summary: In recent years, the A-site ordered half-doped double-perovskite manganites RBaMn2O6 have gained significant attention for their exceptional physical properties and potential applications. This study investigates the origin of the ground-state structure and the electronic and magnetic properties of PrBaMn2O6. The findings offer insights into understanding the contradictions in experimental data and provide a theoretical foundation for refining the ground state structures in other RBaMn2O6 compounds.

Fluctuations of the Multiplicity of Co3+ Ions and Softening of the Phonon Spectrum of Rare-Earth Cobalt Oxides

Yu S. Orlov et al.

Summary: The unconventional temperature dependence of the infrared absorption spectra of rare-earth cobalt oxides LaCoO3 and GdCoO3 has been studied experimentally and theoretically in the temperature range of 3.2-550 K. The results show a significant softening of the optical phonon mode, which cannot be explained by standard lattice anharmonicity. It is demonstrated that the redshift of the phonon spectrum is caused by the electron-phonon coupling in the lattice displacement and fluctuations of the multiplicity of Co3+ ions.

Dynamics of Photoexcited Small Polarons in Transition-Metal Oxides

Lili Zhang et al.

Summary: The dynamics of small polarons induced by photoexcitation in rutile TiO2 were investigated using ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation, revealing significant differences in polaron formation, migration, and quenching at different temperatures. At low temperature, the polaron is localized on a single Ti atom and quenches slowly, while at increased temperature, thermal phonon excitation stimulates polaron hopping and delocalization, leading to fast polaron quenching within 200 ps.

Electronic phase separation: Recent progress in the old problem

M. Yu Kagan et al.

Summary: The study explores nanoscale electronic phase separation in a wide range of materials, particularly in strongly correlated electron systems, where charge carriers' itineracy competes with localization tendencies. This phenomenon is found to be ubiquitous in various situations, often associated with specific magnetic orderings such as antiferromagnetic in manganites and low-spin states in cobaltites. The review article discusses advancements in understanding electronic phase separation and the formation of different types of nanoscale ferromagnetic metallic droplets in various insulating matrices, as well as the effects of colossal magnetoresistance and electron transport in complex magnetic oxides.

Effect of Electronic Correlations on the Electronic Structures of the FeAlO3 and FeSiO3 Compounds

E. D. Chernov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic structures and magnetic properties of FeAlO3 and FeSiO3 iron oxide compounds in the lower Earth mantle using the DFT+U method. The influence of electronic correlations in the 3d shell of transition metal ions on the properties is examined, highlighting the formation of ferro- and antiferromagnetic ordering. Comparative analysis reveals the main characteristics affected by electronic correlations, with theoretical results compared to earlier calculations and experimental data.

Trimeron-phonon coupling in magnetite

Przemyslaw Piekarz et al.

Summary: The study shows good agreement between theoretical and experimental results in the monoclinic phase, while clear discrepancies arise in the cubic phase due to fluctuation effects. This indicates the validity of trimerons and trimeron-phonon coupling theory beyond their original formulation for explaining the physics of magnetite.

Self-consistent Hubbard parameters from density-functional perturbation theory in the ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations

Iurii Timrov et al.

Summary: The study extends the calculation of Hubbard parameters, including onsite Hubbard U and intersite Hubbard V, using the DFPT method, and generalizes the formalism from norm-conserving to ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations. Through benchmarking DFPT against conventional real-space Hubbard linear response, the effectiveness of the extended Hubbard formulation in determining the crystal structure and energetics of Li intercalation is demonstrated.
