Rare regions and avoided quantum criticality in disordered Weyl semimetals and superconductors

J. H. Pixley et al.

Summary: In recent years, disorder in Weyl semimetals and superconductors has been a topic of subtle interest, leading to competition between various theories. This review discusses the theoretical understanding of the effects of short-ranged, quenched disorder on the low-energy properties of three-dimensional, topological Weyl semimetals and superconductors, focusing on non-perturbative rare region effects and their role in destabilizing the semimetal phase and altering the expected semimetal-to-diffusive metal transition. New results on a bipartite random hopping model are presented, confirming previous findings in a p + ip Weyl superconductor. The review also touches on the nature of the avoided transition in a model for a single Weyl cone in the continuum, concluding with a discussion of open questions and future directions.
