Revealing the Role of Electronic Doping for Developing Cocatalyst-Free Semiconducting Photocatalysts

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: Developing cocatalyst-free photocatalysts is important for overcoming the slow interfacial electron transfer in photocatalytic photon utilization. We demonstrate that electronic doping can provide catalytically active sites and additional roles in cocatalyst-free photocatalysts. Tungsten-doped CdS shows superior photocatalytic performance compared to conventional counterparts loaded with platinum cocatalysts.

Revealing the role of surface elementary doping in photocatalysis

Danlu Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the promotion of efficient photocatalysis by creating more surface sites. The surface sites formed by doping can modify the electronic states and reduce the potential for the oxidation half-reaction on the semiconductor surface. Doping CdS with manganese can overcome the dilemma of light-intensity-dependent photon utilization.

Connecting experimental degradation kinetics to theoretical models for photocatalytic reactors: The influence of mass transport limitations

Nicole A. B. Timmerhuis et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of catalytic microreactors in photocatalytic reactions, emphasizing the impact of mass transport limitations on reaction rates. The photocatalytic degradation of Bisphenol A was found to be mass transport limited at high light intensities. Proper consideration of mass transport limitations is crucial for accurately characterizing (photo)catalysts.

Porous Silica Microspheres with Immobilized Titania Nanoparticles for In-Flow Solar-Driven Purification of Wastewater

Ana C. Marques et al.

Summary: In this study, inorganic silica microspheres are utilized as a platform for designing photocatalytic systems for wastewater treatment through solar-driven photocatalysis. The photocatalytically active microspheres are prepared by wet impregnation with TiO2 nanoparticles, leading to an increase in specific surface area and retention of macroporosity. The microspheres exhibit high photocatalytic activity and can be easily removed from the reaction medium, addressing typical challenges associated with TiO2 nanoparticles photocatalysts.

Revealing and Facilitating the Rate-Determining Step for Efficient Sunlight-Driven Photocatalysis

Houkui Xiang et al.

Summary: The key step in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is found to be the interfacial electron transfer between semiconductor and cocatalyst, which operates on a timescale of deciseconds to seconds, significantly larger than previously reported values. Electron doping of the semiconductor surface improves the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and enhances the synergistic thermal effect.

Photocatalytic solar hydrogen production from water on a 100-m2 scale

Hiroshi Nishiyama et al.

Summary: Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, can be obtained through photocatalysis and electrolysis, making it a carbon-neutral energy source. While photocatalytic water splitting efficiency is low, large-scale safe production and collection of hydrogen is feasible. The essential next steps for economic viability and practical use are reactor and process optimization to reduce costs and improve efficiency and stability.
