Quantum effects in thermal reaction rates at metal surfaces

Dmitriy Borodin et al.

Summary: Developing accurate theories for predicting rates of chemical reactions at metal surfaces, particularly in industrial catalysis, is of great interest. Conventional methods lack experimental validation and contain approximations. This study presents experimentally derived thermal rate constants for hydrogen atom recombination on platinum single-crystal surfaces, accurate enough to test theoretical approximations. Quantum effects, such as the wave nature of adsorbed hydrogen atoms and their electronic spin degeneracy, are found to be important, leading to an overestimation of rate constants for temperatures relevant to catalysis.

Kinetics of NH3 Desorption and Diffusion on Pt: Implications for the Ostwald Process

Dmitriy Borodin et al.

Summary: Accurate time-resolved measurements of NH3 desorption from Pt(111) and Pt(332) were reported, and elementary rate constants for desorption from steps, terrace sites, and diffusion on terraces were determined. Conventional models for partition functions were found to be insufficient, but a more sophisticated partition function coupling sensitive degrees of freedom for NH3 translation parallel to the surface yielded accurate values for NH3 binding energy and diffusion barrier. The study also revealed NH3's binding energy preference for steps over terraces on Pt, and explained discrepancies in established rate models of the Ostwald process.

The Barrier for CO2 Functionalization to Formate on Hydrogenated Pt

Jan Fingerhut et al.

Summary: Experimental determination of the barrier and reaction energy for CO2 functionalization on a hydrogenated Pt surface was carried out using velocity resolved kinetics, providing insight into the reaction mechanism. The study showed that the presence of steps on the Pt surface can reduce the barrier for CO2 functionalization, potentially providing a method to optimize catalysts for this process.

NO Binding Energies to and Diffusion Barrier on Pd Obtained with Velocity-Resolved Kinetics

Dmitriy Borodin et al.

Summary: In this study, nitric oxide (NO) desorption rates from Pd(111) and Pd(332) surfaces were measured with velocity-resolved kinetics. Application of transition state theory (TST) to experimental data provided parameters such as NO binding energy, diffusion barrier, and stabilization energy for different surface structures, serving as valuable benchmarks for theoretical studies.

The puzzle of rapid hydrogen oxidation on Pt(111)

Dmitriy Borodin et al.

Summary: This study reports high temporal resolution measurements of the production rate of water from hydrogen oxidation on a Pt single crystal surface, comparing experimental observations to modern ab initio predictions. The experimentally observed rate is four orders of magnitude larger than the theoretically predicted rate, and the reaction kinetics differ between theory and experiment. The discrepancies are believed to stem from the lack of proper identification of the active sites of the catalyst and the associated elementary reactions.
