Diffusion Behavior of Methane in 3D Kerogen Models

Kai Bin Yu et al.

Summary: This study examines the diffusive behavior of methane molecules in kerogen matrices of different types and maturity levels, finding that methane self-diffusivity exhibits some degree of anisotropy and positively correlates with pore volume in Type II kerogens. Additionally, swelling of the kerogen matrix up to a 3% volume change is observed upon methane adsorption. These findings contribute to a better understanding of hydrocarbon transport mechanisms in shale, potentially leading to further development of extraction techniques.

Nanoscale Accessible Porosity as a Key Parameter Depicting the Topological Evolution of Organic Porous Networks

Jeremie Berthonneau et al.

Summary: An experimental procedure was proposed to study the interplay between the chemical evolution and structural properties of the organic porous network at the nanometer scale. Source rock samples were physically reconstructed to measure key parameters, showing a general increase of specific pore volume with thermal maturation, which controls the topological features depicting increasing accessibility to alkane molecules. This highlights the role of electron tomography in studying complex porous media.
