Products and Mechanisms of Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from the NO3 Radical-Initiated Oxidation of Cyclic and Acyclic Monoterpenes

Marla P. DeVault et al.

Summary: Biogenic sources, particularly monoterpenes, are the main contributors to volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions to the atmosphere. The reaction between monoterpenes and oxidants (such as OH radicals, NO3 radicals, or O-3) leads to the formation of oxidized products, some of which can form secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles. This study investigates the reaction between NO3 radicals and five different monoterpenes, comparing their gas- and particle-phase products. The results provide insights into the role of molecular structure in VOC oxidation and particle-phase accretion reactions.

Synthesis and Hydrolysis of Atmospherically Relevant Monoterpene-Derived Organic Nitrates

Yuchen Wang et al.

Summary: The study synthesized seven monoterpene-derived ONs and investigated their hydrolysis in bulk solutions at different pH values. The results showed that the hydrolysis lifetimes were related to alkyl substitution numbers, functional groups, and carbon skeletons. Tertiary and secondary ONs hydrolyzed via an acid-catalyzed unimolecular mechanism, while primary ONs showed a competition of unimolecular and bimolecular mechanisms.

Gas- and Particle-Phase Products and Their Mechanisms of Formation from the Reaction of Δ-3-Carene with NO3 Radicals

Marla P. DeVault et al.

Summary: Monoterpenes are a major source of biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted into the atmosphere annually. A study on the reaction of Delta-3-carene with NO3 radicals revealed the formation of first-generation ring-retaining and ring-opened compounds in the gas phase, while the particle phase consisted mainly of oligomers composed of acetal and hemiacetal dimers. These findings highlight the impact of monoterpene structure on the formation of multifunctional products and significant amounts of secondary organic aerosol.

Summary: Environmental chamber studies are essential for measuring reaction product yields and secondary organic aerosols formed from the oxidation of volatile organic compounds to develop atmospheric chemistry models. These measurements are challenging due to various potential sources of errors that need careful consideration and mitigation.

Comparison of methods of functional group analysis using results from laboratory and field aerosol measurements

Megan S. Claflin et al.

Summary: A study comparing two methods for analyzing functional groups in SOA found that both FTIR spectroscopy and derivatization-spectrophotometric methods are adequate for measuring the functional group composition of SOA. While the derivitization-spectrophotometric methods offer more specificity, they also require more time and aerosol mass for sample analysis than the FTIR methods. Functional group signatures obtained from SOA generated in environmental chambers can potentially be used to gain insight into oxidation and particle-phase reactions responsible for SOA formation in field samples.

Summary: The reactions of 1-tetradecene and 1-pentadecene with OH radicals in the presence of NOx were investigated in environmental chamber experiments. The measured molar yields of products formed were used to calculate branching ratios and to achieve a complete gas-phase reaction mechanism for 1-alkenes.

Chemical transport models often underestimate inorganic aerosol acidity in remote regions of the atmosphere

Benjamin A. Nault et al.

Summary: Observations show that the acidity of inorganic aerosols in remote areas is often higher than predicted by chemical transport models, leading to a potential underestimation of direct radiative cooling effects. Aerosol pH and ammonium balance increase with remoteness, and these differences between observations and predictions may result in underestimating direct radiative cooling effects for sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium aerosols.

Measurements of the partitioning of nitric acid and sulfuric acid in aqueous/organic phase-separated systems

Benjamin L. Deming et al.

Summary: The partitioning of sulfuric acid and nitric acid between aqueous and organic phases may play a role in acid catalysis of organic reactions, depending on the O:C ratio and water content of the organic phase. The addition of ammonium sulfate can lead to an increase or decrease in the partitioning of sulfuric acid to the organic phase, depending on the balance of HSO4- concentration and water content of the organic phase.
