Evolution of microscopic heterogeneity and dynamics in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents

Stephanie Spittle et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationship between micro and macroscopic properties in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) Glyceline and Ethaline using computational and experimental techniques. The authors find that systematic addition of choline chloride leads to microscopic heterogeneities that alter structural relaxation and result in new dynamic modes strongly correlated to the macroscopic properties of the DESs formed.

Non-monotonic composition dependence of the breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation for water in aqueous solutions of ethanol and 1-propanol: explanation using translational jump-diffusion approach

Shivam Dueby et al.

Summary: A series of studies examined the validity of the Stokes-Einstein relationship (SER) in water/alcohol mixtures. The results showed a strong non-monotonic composition dependence of the SER, with maxima observed at specific alcohol mole fractions. The breakdown of SER in pure supercooled water and water/methanol mixtures was explained using the translational jump-diffusion (TJD) approach. This study further generalized the understanding by focusing on the non-monotonic composition dependence of SER breakdown in water/ethanol and water/propanol mixtures.

Choline chloride and ethylene glycol based deep eutectic solvent (DES) versus hydroxyl functionalized room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): assessing the differences in microscopic behaviour between the DES and RTILs

Sahadev Barik et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the differences in behavior between deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in terms of their structure, dynamics, and intra- and intermolecular interactions. The research investigates three different ILs and one DES with similar functionalities through ensembled average and single-molecule spectroscopic techniques. The results show that, despite having similar functionalities, the DES and hydroxyl ILs exhibit significantly different microscopic behaviors, indicating the importance of intermolecular interactions in governing the behaviors of these solvent systems.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.

Heterogeneous Orientational Relaxations and Translation-Rotation Decoupling in (Choline Chloride plus Urea) Deep Eutectic Solvents: Investigation through Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Dielectric Relaxation Measurements

Juriti Rajbangshi et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations and dielectric relaxation measurements were used to study the heterogeneous reorientation dynamics in [f choline chloride + (1 - f) urea] deep eutectic solvents. The results revealed pronounced reorientation dynamics with multiple relaxation timescales and viscosity dependence. This study provides insights into the microscopic origins of the observed dynamics and the deviation from traditional laws.

Correlation between size of nano-aggregates and excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence emission in room temperature ionic liquids: A case study with emim[FAP]

Anup Ghosh et al.

Summary: The emission maximum of a room temperature ionic liquid is found to be dependent on the excitation wavelength, with nano-aggregates emitting at different wavelengths based on their aggregation volume. This relationship was determined using time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy based rotational dynamical analyses and the Stokes-Einstein-Debye relationship.

Correlating Bromelain's activity with its structure and active-site dynamics and the medium's physical properties in a hydrated deep eutectic solvent†

Nilimesh Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of bromelain in a deep eutectic solvent and finds that bromelain adopts different structural conformations and activity levels at different DES concentrations. The study reveals that the compact structural conformation and flexibility of the active site of bromelain are favorable for its proteolytic activity, and that a medium with increased polarity and decreased viscosity enhances its activity. These insights could provide useful guidelines for the rational design of DESs as biocatalytic media.
