A unified equation of settling velocity for particles settling in cylinder, annulus and fracture

Zhaopeng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the settling behavior of particles in pipes, annuli, and parallel plates filled with power-law fluids through particle settling experiments. By analyzing the settling process, the wall effect of annulus is revealed, and the geometric continuity among pipes, annuli, and parallel plates is determined. A unified explicit settling velocity equation applicable to these three cases is established.

A new model for the terminal settling velocity of microplastics

Zijian Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the settling process of microplastic particles in water bodies was investigated, and a new formula for the drag coefficient and settling velocity of microplastic particles was developed. The new formula showed smaller errors and improved accuracy in predicting the motion behavior of microplastics.

On the prediction of settling velocity for plastic particles of different shapes

Simona Francalanci et al.

Summary: The transport processes of plastic particles in freshwater and marine environments are important for predicting the fate of plastic in the environment. By studying the effect of different shapes on settling velocity, a new method was developed to predict the settling velocity of plastic and natural particles across a range of flow regimes. Calibration and validation with experimental data support the application of this method in various hydraulic conditions.

Predicting wall drag coefficient and settling velocity of particle in parallel plates filled with Newtonian fluids

Zhaopeng Zhu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the wall drag force of parallel plates on settling particles through experiments, and established models for the wall drag coefficient and settling velocity of particles in parallel plates. This research is expected to provide guidance for optimizing water hydraulic fracturing in the oil and gas industry.

Settling velocity of irregularly shaped microplastics under steady and dynamic flow conditions

Zhen Wang et al.

Summary: The settling velocity of microplastics in aquatic environments is influenced by factors such as shape irregularity, density, and particle size. Irregular microplastics have a significantly lower settling velocity compared to perfectly spherical microplastics. A model was proposed to predict the correlation between the settling velocity of microplastics and their shape, density, particle size, and water density.

An experimental investigation on the settling velocity and drag coefficient of micrometer-sized natural, IG-110, NG-CT-10 and A3-3 graphite particles

Zhu Fang et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation on the free settling of micrometer-sized graphite particles showed that the drag coefficient of the particles still follows the form of Stokes law and scales inversely proportional to the particle Reynolds number. A new correlation for the drag coefficient was proposed and the Bagheri and Bonadonna's correlation was found to well represent the drag coefficient of graphite particles in a wide range of particle Reynolds number.
